You might appreciate this anecdote: A number of years ago my wife and I, with our kids, visited the Holocaust Memorial, my boys were 14 and 12 at the time. They gave each of the four of us a card which traced the story of a Holocaust victim, the idea being you read about the person, then at the end you flip the court over and see what happened to your person. I cheated, I looked at all four cards before giving them out. All four survived. I went back to the person and asked for different cards, as I wanted to have a more realistic impact on my kids. The woman appreciated my thinking and gave me a different set of cards. That one had two survivors.
The memorial in DC is one that is very moving. That was part of what added to my anger regarding her statement. Yours feelings are much more personal and understandable.
