Not green but jolly, Polish Shrek seeks MP job
WARSAW (Reuters) - Poles still wondering whom to back in Sunday's general election can now vote for a fairy tale candidate. Or almost.
Stanislaw Szrek, pronnounced "Shrek" in Polish, does not resemble the friendly, green ogre who shot to international fame as the star of movies by U.S. studio DreamWorks, but he is receiving just as much publicity in Polish media.
"We published the electoral list and I became famous overnight," Szrek, a candidate of the pro-business Civic Platform, told Reuters.
"Maybe there's something in a name. I am 57 so I suppose if I get a youth vote it will be the Shrek connection."
A civil engineer by training, Szrek says he has been giving interviews all week, stressing his electoral pitch is not far from what the kind-hearted ogre stood for in his fairy tale.
"The message in the film is basically the same as mine: be good, do the best for people," he said.
