Nope. Cat 5 is as high as it gets. Those are pretty rare.

Don't the generally pick up speed over the ocean then slow down as it gets closer to shore?

Is there a category 6? Yes, we call it Al Gore. But seriously, this is one scary situation, good luck to all those on the gulf coast. What's the latest info on where it may hit landfall?

I thought the same.
Really, how could it not be a MONSTER.
It has nothing between it and Texas but warm ocean water and no land to break it up.
This is gonna be a bad one. The souls in TX are taking it seriously...hope all make it out okay.

I believe a CAT 6 is when the storm turns into one big tornado.
I had a friend who flew into those, his name was Gary Peel; if any of you know him, please let me know.

Is there a category 6?No, according to NOAA, there is no "Cat 6".
However, there is a "Jumbo Cat 5", a "SuperSize Cat 5", a "New and Improved Cat 5", and a "Phantasmagorical Cat 5".

Remember Katrina, which reached cat 5 status, but the weakened a bit as it approaches shore. Hopefully that happens with Rita..

There might be a new Category created by the end of the day.
I think they should call this one the Wicked Witch of the South.

Is there a Cat 6? OK City proved that there was a "greater than F5" tornado, and Indonesia/Alaska proved that there is a "greater than 8 Richter" earthquake, and NASA found a ninth and tenth planet in our solar system.

This is typical ... Rita is in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, prime feeding grounds for hurricanes. As the eye moves toward land, and out of the warmest water, she'll most likely drop back to 4 or even 3 before landfall.
Remember (newshype notwithstanding) this is not a sentient being, it isn't "gathering strength" in the sense of willful behaviour, and it doesn't have targets.

If God were to pick up the Gulf of Mexico and drop it on Houston, that would be a Cat. 6.
