Don't the generally pick up speed over the ocean then slow down as it gets closer to shore?Yes, as the outer arms hit land, it will slow back down ,just as Katrina did. Still, even a cat 3 at landfall will kick up a devistating surge. And it will be cat 5 over any oil rigs.

I think so, but this thing is a Cat 5 and it's still a long way from shore.
That means it is still not done warming up and sucking up moisture.
This thing is a MONSTER.

Not sure about that, but they charge up over the water. Right now the gulf of Mexico is very warm and the hurricane feeds on that warmth. That's why Katrina became such a nightmare once she got into the Gulf. Rita's doing the same thing.
