Could you explain the ratio between the barometric pressure and the strength of a hurricane? I see the numbers mentioned, but don't know what it means.

The lower the pressure, the stronger the hurricane... On the Saffir-Simpson scale that we use, hurricanes are classified by wind speed, not by pressure. Cat 1 starts when the winds hit 74 mph, 2 at 96, 3 at 111, 4 at 131, 5 at 156. Super Typhoon Tip had wind speeds of 190+ mph...
