Right, Andrew intensified very quickly, just as it reached landfall. It was Cat5, plus the relatively quick forward motion (20mph) that made the winds in the northern eye wall so bad. Knocked down some concrete block structures..

Byebye for Port O'Connor, maybe, but I think NO won't hardly get any weather from this...

Look at the current Sat picture on the website this thread links to.

cat 5 ?!?! What's the water temp in the track ?

Someone posted it earlier on the Rita Thread - The WARMEST water is in the western Gulf, the track Katrina took was over some of the cooler gulf waters. Rita has nothing but fuel ahead of it ...

We may yet come to consider Katrina a good thing because it got everyone out of the way of Rita. Hokey smokes...

Is there a Cat 6? OK City proved that there was a "greater than F5" tornado, and Indonesia/Alaska proved that there is a "greater than 8 Richter" earthquake, and NASA found a ninth and tenth planet in our solar system.

Don't know weather to hope for that or not. We really do not need this. Better there then a whole new area I guess.

"Luckily, it appears that Texas is better prepared and taking it seriously."

Haven't you been paying attention? Everyone knows George Bush is starting to mobilize FEMA and the Rde Cross early because he cares more about his home state than he cares about the, poor, down-trodden black population of New Orleans... ;-)

Cat 5's: Were they Andrew, Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 and Camille? Or was it the Galveston Hurricane of 1900 that was the third cat 5?

All the useful models are in an extremely tight cluster right around Matagorda Bay. It's not going to get anywhere near Louisiana.

Look at the current Sat Picture.

This is typical ... Rita is in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, prime feeding grounds for hurricanes. As the eye moves toward land, and out of the warmest water, she'll most likely drop back to 4 or even 3 before landfall.

Remember (newshype notwithstanding) this is not a sentient being, it isn't "gathering strength" in the sense of willful behaviour, and it doesn't have targets.
