Hurricane Rita Live Thread, Part VI

The wind's picking up here now, even though she's been downgraded to CAT III. This is the latest NOAA photo.

Frankly, all this coverage of watching New Orleans flood again is making me, and I'm sure lot of other people, even more convinced that the rebuilding of New Orleans cannot happen in anything close to the same way it was before.

Well, here's a photo of what's going on with the levee:

Looks like it's well on the way to becoming a breach.

I've been bouncing around the local blogs and kept hitting that one as it was still updating. Plus, BIG plus, it's conservative.

The only flood gages giving a reading in the Lake Charles/Beaumont/Port Arthur area since 1:30AM CDT are in Jefferson County, TX.

Water at the Hillebrandt Bayou nr Lovell Lake, TX flood gage has risen about 0.35 feet since 12 Midnight CDT (as of 3AM); the flood gage at Pine Island Bayou abv BI Pump Plant, Beaumont, TX shows water levels declining (as of 2:30AM).

Lovell Lake is at the star on this map (not on the Sabine Pass):

What that says to me, is that it's past time to start drilling off the coast of FL. -- and CA and AK, WY, UT, and develop tar sands in Utah, abandon the Clinton land grab of the Utah Kaipirowitz plateau (the largest deposit of clean burn coal in the US) - also known as Grand Staircase - locked up for Indonesian campaign favors.

Did someone say energy policy? National security?

Take a look at the first chart:
