As a side note, this seemed like the perfect time to part with our really old and feeble dog. It just wasn't worth figuring out what to do with her. I could have gone the rest of my life and been better for it by not reading your side note. It's sad, and we didn't need to hear it.

It helped that Dvorak numbers were singing Cat 5 at 11 AM ("Dad - it's gonna be a Cat 5.
GET OUT!").
It helped that Rockport called for a mandatory evacuation.
And it helped the mayor's wife called and told them where they had found a hotel room fairly close by.

Checking in from Sugar Land, about a mile from hwy 59. Haven't decided if were going to leave home yet. Might stay in town with my sister's family. She's only about a couple of miles away, but her home is built like a fortress -- masonry walls over 1 ft. thick.

FOLKS!!! Don't stop in Central Texas, if you have a choice. We're expecting 50-70 MPH winds up here in Dallas!! Waco, and Palestine, and Austin, and College Station are going to get pounded by even higher winds and more rain! If you can get to Arkansas or Oklahoma or further north, do it!

I've got an idiot cousin in Pasadena who says he needs to stay behind to take care of his kids and grand kids because none of them are leaving either.
To be fair, his wife is an RN and she can't leave (so he says). They're not evacuating her mother, either, from a nursing home near Hobby Airport. I told him that was a mistake, and that we would take her in if he could get an ambulance to bring her.
But, he said no.

I'm in Dallas ~ my husband is in Galveston right now picking up his 94 year aunt. They will be leaving there
(hopefully) within the next hour headed this way. I haven't seen or heard what the routes out are like - pretty congested, I'd imagine.
*sigh* I'll breath easier once I know they are north of Huntsville.
I am currently expecting to have his aunt plus 5 additional folks from the Houston area all here to ride out the storm in Dallas.

Plan to stay in Kingwood. Since this area is HIGHLY Republican, we expect Rove/Bush to steer the Hurricane selectively through Kingwood.
However, I do expect it to take out my next door neighbor who is the Chairperson of the Kingwood Democrats organization. Ain't it great to have friend in HIGH places!

I'm at work (downtown Houston) right now, and will be heading home at the regular time.
If we stay, we're where my tagline says.
If we go, we'll head for Brenham.

I'll be riding out the storm in Northwest Houston. The loss of power for an extended period of time is what I'm most worried about. Thanks for the prayers everyone!
To: Howlin
We are riding it out in Houston, in Bellaire (southwest of downtown Houston). Myself, spouse and two Golden Retrievers.
We are outside the 610 Loop, near Hwy 59 (south).
My siblings and 85-year old mother (all live in Galveston Co TX) -- just this hour left for Austin, TX, where they have accommodations.
They will be part of the gigantic traffic jam, bumper-to-bumper from Houston to Austin. Not a pleasant thought. A 6-hour drive which will probably take 10.
We have everything we need. Not to be smug, but I think we know what to do and I think we know how to do it.
As long as we have power, I'll be checking FR.
