Well, I hope your run of good luck keeps up, though I was really looking for a little bit of tech palaver and not any sort of argument. Thanks for your input.

None of the spyware removers can get more than perhaps half to two-thirds of it. You have to run several of them to get decent coverage.

I just don't believe that. I've never had one bit of spyware show up on my machine... none. One time years ago, I stupidly installed Gator and had a bit of a tough time deleting it, but that was years ago. Nothing since. I hate to sound like a tinfoilhatter, but I'm suspicious that the spyware removers are baiting their own trap.

There was an article recently, I thought I read it on Jane's but can't find it now, it was with an N.S.A. Security Analyst, he was talking about the new generations of spyware, each thing he said was more omininous than the next, the discussion was moving in terms of just exactly *what* spyware/Malware could do... This is paraphrased, but what he said was chilling. in essence: "We don't KNOW what it can or cannot do, -and the only way we could HOPE to understand the full scope of the problem was to: "Analyze the packets on an "atomic level". -related link: /http://tinyurl.com/dqoz5

Many of the spyware removers are selling F.U.D. and baiting their own trap, that is true.

There is a change occurring over the last 3 to 9 months most noticeably. Some serious money or national interests are putting serious effort into owning (having hacked control over) as many millions of PC's as they can, without being noticed by the PC owner.

Fewer and fewer users have sufficiently narrow computer usage patterns that they are safe from such attacks. It is rapidly becoming no longer responsible to encourage running malware or spyware detection tools, even as it becomes increasingly difficult to cull the tools that do more good than harm from those that don't do so.

Please don't continue to encourage unsafe computing practices.

I'm not recommending unsafe computing practices.

I said buy good commercial antivirus and spyware applications and keep them up to date, and don't install every free scareware tool that some kid typed up in his basement. All the people who report the most problems have installed every doohicky and gadget they've found a free download for and wonder where all the crap is coming from.

it's amazing how many technology issues take on the fanaticism of a religious war.

Mac vs. PC

windows vs. linux

and now, IE vs. FF

I'm sure we are all missing a very important point somewhere.

Neither one of us is advocating installing all the scareware that comes along; that crap is one of the major contributors to the problems we face.

But the list of antivirus and spyware apps, and other tools such as spam filters, software firewalls (esp good for controlling outbound malware), hardware firewalls (esp good for controlling inbound worms and hacks), and other such is getting longer. More tools are needed than just a year ago, as well as more expertize and more effort.

I know. I believe if you want a 100% secure computer you must keep it turned off and unpluged. I just like firefox because I think it has better features than IE and improves your overall online experience. I downloaded Opera and it will take a little time to get used to it.

FYI
To render pages faster in Opera (the newest and FREE) go to preferences, look for "loading" and highlight "redraw instantly". It is set to 1 sec by default.
Do this and it blows firefox away -

Hmm. You can right click on one of your tool bars and go to customize. From there, you can click one of the toolbars which is outside of the customize menu (You'll notice the bar becomes highlighted) and move it around, etc. I can move the personal par to the top, bottom, left or right but cant place it directly beneath the addy bar. Still trying, though.
If you look at the bottom left, you will notice "show hidden toolbars while customizing", which shows all toolbars which you can highlight and make live changes to in the customize menu.
Hope this isn't confusing. If so, let me know and I'll try again.

I've been a firefox/deerpark, firebird user for a while and was using firefox 1.05 beta 1 prior to trying the free opera. I noticed the pages rendering slower than FF by about a second until I found the aformentioned change.
Now there is no comparison. Opera simply blows it away. But, I understand you get used to something and its hard to change.
I never used a personal bar before which is why I havent tried to change it.
Good luck

thanks for the help. I like the personal bar cause i can put my bookmarks on it and its really easy and fast that way to get around, one for FR, Drudge, tinypic, NFL.com, and a few other sites that i visit everyday. makes it easier. :) not sure that I like Opera better... it's different... not sure if its better

No prob. So far, Opera smokes FF. (For me, anyway!).
I will keep searching, though and try to find you an answer if one is out there. There may be an opera toolbar setup you can use to change it around. Go here to check it out:
http://my.opera.com/community/customize/

At any rate, Ill let you know if I find anything.
