SACRAMENTO (AP) - Treasurer Phil Angelides, one of two Democratic candidates for governor next year, received the backing Tuesday of the leader of the state Assembly.

Assembly Speaker Fabian Nunez, D-Los Angeles, said Angelides has consistently opposed Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's spending priorities and will be the strongest Democratic candidate to take on Schwarzenegger next year.

"Phil Angelides stood up to Gov. Schwarzenegger's attacks against students and teachers from the beginning," said Nunez at a news conference held at a Sacramento school.

Angelides and Controller Steve Westly are both running in the Democratic primary that will be held in June 2006.

The Republican Schwarzenegger has said he is also running.

In addition to Nunez, Angelides has also received the endorsement of both of California's U.S. Senators - Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer - as well as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco.

Westly got the endorsement Tuesday from the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs, which represents 8,000 law enforcement officers. He also said he's got the backing of 50 elected officials from throughout California.

I don't have a problem voting for a Dem if he is better than Arnold. Don't know anything about this fellow, though.

None of 'em are better than Arnold, but Issa and Parsky are the only two the Repubs are offering as an alternative to Arnold and Issa seems to be the least of all evils as far as I can see from a conservative point of view. Parsky is a total putz!!! Issa hasn't got the cleanest hands!!! Schwartzie has gone GANG-GREEN and squandered all his political capital!!!

He's big on taxing the crap out of us. If you check out his web sight he has listed policies he is trying to enact with CalPERS and CalSTERS. Both pension funds are moving forward with plans to support or co-support shareholder proposals on global warming in 2005, continuing to push companies in which the funds invest to disclose their environmental liabilities, with specific attention to the auto and utilities industries. I pulled this quote from a web sight from the League of Women Voters web sight from 1998, “Angelides has called for the establishment of a California version of Bill Clinton's centrist "Democratic Leadership Council," as though the Democratic Party isn't already far enough to the right!” He’s also very big on unions and the support of Boxer and Pelosi.
As state Democratic chairman in 1992, Angelides helped Bill Clinton win California. He also came under fire during that year's bruising Senate contest, in which Barbara Boxer narrowly beat GOP candidate Bruce Herschensohn after a last-minute leak from a Democratic operative that Herschensohn had visited strip clubs. Angelides denied involvement in the leak but later said the information was fair game.
"Angelides is a mean-minded, terrible partisan hack," said GOP strategist Ken Khachigian, who ran the Herschensohn campaign and previously worked for Nixon and President Reagan. "Arnold can expect a mean gut fighter who'll run a very hard-hitting, dirty campaign. He'll stoop to anything."

Phil Angelides makes Arnold look fiscally sober. He's a tax and spend liberal Democrat. He's never met a tax increase he hasn't liked and his idea of government is one with no limits.

If nominated, I will not run... If elected, I will not serve... you know the routine, right?

20 million people like you are the biggest reason I'm glad I don't live in California anymore...

Why? I think it's better to purge the party of people like Schwartzenegger if the Dems put up a better opponent. There always might be a Zell Miller out there (but I seriously doubt it).

It's from the song "Creeping Death" by Metallica. It's about the Tenth Plague of Egypt. You should hear it.
