Families and Friends of the Vanguard Brigade
The day is coming when the temperature will drop below 100 degrees during the day it is amazing how much cooler it feels compared to the summer. We have had some mornings in the 70s can almost feel a slight chill in the air.
It has been a very tough week. First, on 14 September, Al Queda declared war on the Shia population and we had 12 car bombs explode in Baghdad, but only one was in our area which slightly wounded a US Soldier (not from our brigade) and the suicide driver was killed. The Iraqis and Iraqi security forces paid the price, but despite the news, many of the attacks were ineffective. There was one attack that killed and wounded scores of Iraqis and the constant news coverage of this incident made it look like Baghdad was one huge war zone. Not true. We continue to be amazed by the lack of demonstrations and reprisal attacks. While we escaped the first day of bombing relatively unscathed, we did have three suicide car bomb attacks the next day that killed both Iraqis and Iraqi security forces, though not in the numbers of the day prior. Overall, the car bombs in our area have had little to no effect.
The first referendum for the ratification of the Constitution is on 15 October, less than 30 days away. We find it amazing that despite all the violence, every poll shows the Iraqis will vote in huge numbers. For those against the process, they have no alternative political solution to offer and have resorted to violence, assassination, and intimidation. Up to this point, it appears that this approach has failed. While the run up to the elections may have more violence, we suspect it will have little effect on the outcome. We are often asked what we think will happen will the Constitution be ratified or not? We do not know it is hard enough to understand American politics, so we claim no expertise in Iraqi politics. Iraqis will decide and we are optimists in the expected outcome. The good news is that average Iraqis are taking greater interest in their political process.
We are very sad to announce the deaths of four great Soldiers. Sergeant Silva, 1-184 Infantry was killed by a roadside bomb on 15 September. First Sergeant Gifford, Private First Class Ford, and Sergeant Deckard, all from 4-64 Armor, were killed by two massive roadside bombs on 16 September. Our prayers go out to their families and friends.
Over eighty percent of the brigade has completed their leave and we should be finished by November. We know there are several different dates floating out there for our redeployment. We just want to remind everyone that these are planning dates and are subject to change. We want to ensure our Soldiers stay focused on their mission not on our redeployment. If there are any questions, the rear detachment can help you. Our commitment is to keep you updated with the latest information with the understanding that it may change depending on the situation and the mission.
With all the tragedy this week, our Soldiers still continue to perform their mission every day. These are strong Americans, who, in the face of adversity, summon their courage to continue the mission -- they are simply incredible. Thanks for all of your continued support that keeps our Soldiers focused on their mission it keeps them safe.
Vanguard! Rock of the Marne!
Very Respectfully, Colonel Ed Cardon and Command Sergeant Major Louis Torres
Liberating Iraq PING.
Thanks for all you do- Real Americans honor our soldiers.
