Opens the door for a stealth conservative candidate for the next go round.
The democrats have proved they will oppose anyone Bush nominated. If they were smart they would have gone along with Roberts since his confirmation is very likely. I think the majority of the population saw just how intelligent and capable he is for the job.
The dems could then have ranted and raved about how "far right" the next nominee is all the while wearing their "bipartisan" patch on showing how fair and balanced they are.
Bring on Janice Rogers Brown, or better yet, the white guy Luttig.

Luttig would be an excellent "in your face" choice at this point. Better than Janice Brown IMO. Better still would be Samuel Alito, although he is older. No pandering to the women or minorities - bring on the old white men!!
