Roberts will get very few Democrat votes, regardless of merit. It is a strategy designed to scare the President into nominating a "moderate" (read: Liberal) - or else. They think Bush is weakened politically, and that they can afford to challenge him. They are also more than willing to do so, given the present state of the Democrat base, as reflected by ferocious Left-wing activist opposition to Roberts. The stakes will be higher with the next nomination, in their minds, with a Supreme Court "swing" vote in the balance.

The way I see it, the current court is balanced between 4 leftist ideologues and 4 Justices.

I agree with everything you said but I think you're missing the strategery here. Roberts is in. It may be tight but he's in. Then President Bush nominates another equally unimpeachable Janice Rogers Brown. Black. Female. Daughter of sharecroppers. Chief Justice of the CA Sup. Ct. for 9 years - oh and conservative. So what?
Demonize her? The dims would alienate 90% of America. Two in - maybe a couple more ... we'll see. Any bets? ;-)
