Challenged by Creationists, Museums Answer Back
The New York Times ^ | 9/20/2005 | CORNELIA DEAN

ITHACA, N.Y. - Lenore Durkee, a retired biology professor, was volunteering as a docent at the Museum of the Earth here when she was confronted by a group of seven or eight people, creationists eager to challenge the museum exhibitions on evolution.

They peppered Dr. Durkee with questions about everything from techniques for dating fossils to the second law of thermodynamics, their queries coming so thick and fast that she found it hard to reply.

After about 45 minutes, "I told them I needed to take a break," she recalled. "My mouth was dry."

That encounter and others like it provided the impetus for a training session here in August. Dr. Durkee and scores of other volunteers and staff members from the museum and elsewhere crowded into a meeting room to hear advice from the museum director, Warren D. Allmon, on ways to deal with visitors who reject settled precepts of science on religious grounds.

Do you have anything to say that isn't factually wrong?

Well except for the whole Global Warming business.

"Global warming" is not science either. If anything, it's mutual assent to ideology masquerading as science.

Check out Michael Crichton's most excellent presentation on the subject: Aliens Cause Global Warming: Why Science-by-Consensus Isn't.

That argument has nothing to do with the original charge. No evolutionist MOBS a place where creationism is taught to drown out the teacher. Nice try at deflection, though.

You have a choice on whether or not to send your children to public school or to go to a public museum based on the fact that those public institutions don't happen to 100% support your personal religious interpretation of the way the world works. I'm sorry you're PO'd your tax money goes to things you don't like, but you know what? T.s., my friend. My tax money goes to many things I don't care for. That is life in the big city.

Evolutionists have no idea why inert molecules should ever feel "compelled" to reproduce at all.

Hey, why does this inert pen feel "compelled" to fall to the floor when I let go of it?

Why bother consuming energy to create copies of a string of molecules? What is the force that 'forces" this to happen?

I sure hope they use that Spaghetti Monster in their seminars.

I love the Spaghetti Monster. Everything you need to know about religion in one place.

Public school is the house of worship for the evolutionists.

Yeah. They do nothing but teach evolution ALL FRICKIN' DAY.

Do you have any idea how ridiculous your statement comes off? Get a grip! Sheesh.

Looking at your tagline, I don't think you're going to change your mind because of me.

I'm not a professional naturologist. I just care about how they taste. My previous post was tongue in cheek.

I do, however, invite you to present your case.

They are quite civilized in their protectionism of their ideology, they use the judicial branch, and the Department of Education. The evolutionist after all sit supreme above the rest of the subhuman, mentally frail and weak minded species.

"Science relies on observation, evidence, and testing of hypotheses."

Every hypothesis and theory is an act of faith.

Furthermore, the more science has advanced the more it has validated the Bible. Cosmology is in total disarray since the latest scientific dogma about the expanding universe has been totally destroyed by learning that galaxies are accelrating away from each other, not the reverse as the dogmatic science of our high school textbooks had previously taught us. The founder of modern science and the scientific process to which you allude was a strong believer in Christ and the truths of the Bible. (Sir Isaac Newton)

The next major advance in science was by Einstein who himself believes God must be behind everything.

The greatest mind in quantum electro-dynamics, Feynman, also believed God must be behind physics because he could not believe how certain universal constants came to exist without Him.

It is also no coincidence that science and engineering have flourished in a Christian environment. As Jefferson noted, Christianity allows for the greatest expansion of the mind and science.

"There are more sure marks of authenticity in the Bible than any in profane history." -- Sir Isaac Newton, father of modern science

Perhaps you weould like to lecture Sir Isaac about scientific processes and their obviation of Biblical truths?

"It has been my experience that the disbelief in the revelation that God has given...is more prevalent among what I may call the camp followers of science than amongst those to whom science is the business of their lives." -- Dr. Alexander MacAlister, Biologist, Physiologist. Professor of Anatomy at Cambridge University

The theory now under the politically correct phrase "common descent" is all about the survival of the fittest.

Now for the fittest to survive the theory must be applied in all manner of education. Have you not check out the status of education these days, how many billions did the President send to that system of education?

Yes I am well aware of how much love the evolutionists has for the "Monster", gives one great insight into the mind of the evolutionists.

I think that if you look at the context, you cannot help but see that the particular "settled precept" in question there was not the scientific method at all, but a naturalistic presupposition that the laity are not allowed to question.

Yes, and that's telling, isn't it? They are able to keep the public sector their domain by using sound arguments and mainstream channels. The fundies have to resort to left-wing tactics because their arguments are fundamentally flawed.

The evolutionist after all sit supreme above the rest of the subhuman, mentally frail and weak minded species.

This evolutionist, who is also quite religious, simply prefers that one interpretation of the Christian religion not be allowed to trample the ongoing findings of scientific inquiry.

You are not being denied your voice. Your religious freedom is not being violated. You have the right to raise your children the way you want and to teach them what you want. But you want to take that right away from me. Why is that?

The monotremes, represented by the platypus and two species of echidna, occur only in Australia and New Guinea.

They're a very odd set of animals. Both lay eggs, rather than bearing their young alive. However, their young are fed with milk from mammary glands, so they're mammals...the only egg-laying mammals.

Since their home ground was isolated from Africa a long time ago, they've developed in their own way due to that isolation. There's a very good fossil history now for the monotremata, and it's fascinating.

If you look at the skull of an echidna, and didn't know that it was a mammal, you'd be almost certain that it was a bird's skull. The platypus, too has a skull that doesn't look much like a mammals, either.

In one of the oddest things about the monotremata, in my mind, is the fact that the echidnas carry their eggs, after they're laid, in a small pouch until they hatch. Then, the young attach themselves to a nipple.

This is pretty familiar stuff, since the marsupials also have a pouch, but their young are born alive, but in a very early fetal stage, and live in the pouch, attached to a nipple, just like the echidnas.

The monotremata are a relic, with only three living members of the group, and they're probably going to go extinct before another couple hundred years pass. The later marsupial species are much more varied, however, and are doing OK.

The whole mammalian ecology of Australia is quite a study for evolution researchers. It's fascinating.

If you need more information, just search for "monotremes" on Google. There are several excellent sites.

"Quite true, but ethical scientists strive to eliminate bias. Most clergy I have encountered are completely closed to notions or concepts other than what they learned in seminary."

All true, and I pretty much agree with you.

Just picking on the hyperbole. There are bad scientists.

And scientists should not be afraid of legitimate --- LEGITIMATE --- confrontation and discussion.

Note the word "Legitimate" Which does not include routinely debunked dishonest B.S. about the 2nd law of themodynamics so often heard --- (To which I respond --- see that big light in the sky? Feel the heat?)

And please note, I am a fundamentalist Christian --- converted from Jew, no less. So serious about the Bible I knowingly pissed away pretty much my whole family on conversion, and did it nonetheless.

I believe every word in the Bible. Literally.

I am also a petroleum engineer. And a geologist. I find coral reefs. In New Mexico. 15,000 feet down.

The problem is not Genesis. It is the pre-conceived agenda people read into the Bible to reach YEC and other stuff that is simply NOT IN THE BIBLE.

if you think this conflict only exists outside the church and within the church creationism is accepted then you are greatly mistaken.
