Report: Russia to Freeze Gasoline Prices
The Associated Press ^ | Sep 19 1:43 PM US/Eastern | The AP

Posted on 09/20/2005 3:52:14 AM PDT by .cnI redruM

Russia's major oil producers agreed Monday to freeze their gasoline prices in the country until the end of the year, the Interfax news agency said, citing the Industry and Energy Ministry.

The oil companies made the decision at a meeting with Industry and Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko, Interfax quoted ministry spokesman Stas Naumov as saying. The ministry could not immediately be contacted Monday.

"The result of the meeting was a voluntary decision by the management of Russia's largest companies; prices won't rise any further on the domestic market until the end of the year," the official said, according to Interfax.

Surging oil prices worldwide have boosted the cost of gasoline in Russia, the world's second-largest oil exporter after Saudi Arabia, provoking criticism from Kremlin-loyal politicians. Gas prices rose by a ruble in the space of a week as of Tuesday, to 18 rubles ($0.63) per liter (0.26 gallon).

The biggest Russian crude oil producer, Lukoil, announced a unilateral cap on gasoline prices Monday with immediate effect. Another major oil company, TNK-BP, which is a 50-percent joint venture with British oil giant BP, declined to confirm the price freeze, but said it would make an announcement Tuesday.

"We support the government's efforts to ease up tensions on the fuel market," TNK-BP spokeswoman Marina Dracheva told The Associated Press.

In a statement, Lukoil blamed high mineral-resource taxes that are pegged to world prices, as well as under-investment in domestic refineries.

Btw Where have you been? Short vacation? Let me guess you visited Belarus? North Korea? China? ehhh doesn’t matter! I’m glad that you are back on FR. It was really boring time without you, there was nobody to ague with (you know Gary cannot be treated seriously).

Japan and Germany both had a parlimentary system before they were hijacked in the prewar years. Even Russia had a nascent parlimentary system that was equally hijacked (and then just plain outright killed).

“Jb6” with his sympathy to post-communist hardly may be considered as a truth conservative…

Hah, considering you cheerlead for quite a few of those apparatchuks yourself, just the ones who belly dance to the EU tune.

Took a little vacation, went to see my wife's family and some of my friends in Russia and since we were just across the mountains from Georgia and I didn't need a visa to get in, took a 3 day trip there too. Watching the success of that revolution was rather eye opening, especially the poor people who were going through the piles of trash along with the street dogs, didn't see that 5 years ago, the last time I visited. Rather enlightening, I'd say.

Oh and the fact that prices were 3 times more expensive on everything, to include food was something I hadn't planned on, more expensive then I thought. Now I will say they were repaving the streets, the traffic lights were working and the cops had new cars, thanks all to the US taxpayer, but the average joe was poorer then ever. Almost everyone in Tbilisi were mountain villagers since the original city people all left the country. Oh and the hotel rooms were as expensive as Moscow's.

I know that the Russians don’t need the visas to cross Georgian border in Abkhazia or South Ossetia. Who cares that Georgian government oppose such scandalous practices?

So you are telling me that you visited the country that you want basically destroy, slashing their territories into little pieces? Do you shared your brilliant views with locals?

In rare cases, democracy could be introduced at gunpoint after fundamental sociopsychological collapse (Japan 1945), but this collapse of the pre-existing system is an absolutely necessary condition for that, I'd think.

I agree. The defeated must be forced, by it being the least harmful choice, to abandon a lifetime of strongly held beliefs.

You know, if you were have as crafty as you think you are, you'd be dangerous. Guess the part that I went to Tbilisi escaped you...but the truth usually does, those nasty details you hate so much. You tried your lieing lines before, trying to convince people I wasn't from the US, even tried with some North Carolinians. About ten minutes later they knew the liar you are, once I finished talking with them about the tarheel state and where what is located. But then again, never stopped a good propagandist like you, does it?

So you are telling me that you visited the country that you want basically destroy, slashing their territories into little pieces? Do you shared your brilliant views with locals?

There is a saying here: Better to keep your mouth shut and let people wonder if you are a fool rather then to open your mouth and dispell all doubt.

You've once again dispelled all doubt. The fact that the Georgians were in the midst of genocide in those territories doesn't bother you, not as long as they kiss up to your masters in Brussels and you get your pay check and your government gets its handouts, all is good. They bend their knee to the EU, just like the communists ruling Moldova and you declare them heros, how typical. Watch yourself, the poison ichor dripping from your fangs is showing again.

Tell us more about this "genocide" the Georgian people are guilty of. Some evidence that this alleged "ethnic cleansing" ever happened might be nice since nobody has ever heard of it. Sounds to me like you are just playing your "ethnic" race card again like always.

The truth is that the genocidal Basayev himself fought with the Abkhazians against the Christian nation of Georgia in order to fulfill the dream of a muslim Caucasus. Dhimmis like you continue Basayev's jihad to this day.

"Russia's major oil producers agreed Monday to freeze their gasoline prices in the country "

Sounds like they are going back to communism.

"Something to note, their lowest standard of gas is 93 octane, our highest."

Leave it to jb6 to praise the virtues of still putting lead into gasoline.

Also, while the Moldovan government is communist, the separatists Russia supports in Transdniester are even more communist! Trans-Dniester's surreal life - 'A giant statue of Lenin towers outside the president's office. Across the road flutters a green-and-red Trans-Dniester flag, bearing the hammer and sickle of the USSR. Trans-Dniester money and passports also bear Soviet symbols. ...A youth group called Breakthrough, which supports the president, has set up what it calls the "Che Guevara High School".'

You support these Stalinists? For shame!
