Report: Russia to Freeze Gasoline Prices
The Associated Press ^ | Sep 19 1:43 PM US/Eastern | The AP

Posted on 09/20/2005 3:52:14 AM PDT by .cnI redruM

Russia's major oil producers agreed Monday to freeze their gasoline prices in the country until the end of the year, the Interfax news agency said, citing the Industry and Energy Ministry.

The oil companies made the decision at a meeting with Industry and Energy Minister Viktor Khristenko, Interfax quoted ministry spokesman Stas Naumov as saying. The ministry could not immediately be contacted Monday.

"The result of the meeting was a voluntary decision by the management of Russia's largest companies; prices won't rise any further on the domestic market until the end of the year," the official said, according to Interfax.

Surging oil prices worldwide have boosted the cost of gasoline in Russia, the world's second-largest oil exporter after Saudi Arabia, provoking criticism from Kremlin-loyal politicians. Gas prices rose by a ruble in the space of a week as of Tuesday, to 18 rubles ($0.63) per liter (0.26 gallon).

The biggest Russian crude oil producer, Lukoil, announced a unilateral cap on gasoline prices Monday with immediate effect. Another major oil company, TNK-BP, which is a 50-percent joint venture with British oil giant BP, declined to confirm the price freeze, but said it would make an announcement Tuesday.

"We support the government's efforts to ease up tensions on the fuel market," TNK-BP spokeswoman Marina Dracheva told The Associated Press.

In a statement, Lukoil blamed high mineral-resource taxes that are pegged to world prices, as well as under-investment in domestic refineries.

Leave it to jb6 to praise the virtues of still putting lead into gasoline.

And leave it Spanalot to once more prove he knows nothing. Russian gasoline is sold in Europe, the Germans removed lead from paint, gasoline, etc a long time before we did. The Soviets are gone, mind blasting concept for you I know, and with them most of their practices.

Were they? I hate to tell you this but the right wing opposition in Moldova is even more pro-west than the communists, favoring entry into NATO.

"The Moldovan nation is grateful to the Soviet Army for the 1944 liberation, in spite of statements by the so-called historians who have falsified the truth about World War II." - Moldovan President Voronin

Wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that 1. they russianized 150 years ago 2. 90% are Russian citizens and 3. Georgians tried to cleanse them from their lands to mysteriously they don't want to speak Georgian.

Russianized?? I through that you will say Georgianized. At least it was one of the pretext to proclaim independence and noew they are using Russian... So they were Russianized. Any comments? Sakashvilli offered them wide autonomy so problem with Ossetian language doesn’t exist anymore.

90% are Russian citizens

That is because Russia granted them citizenship (scandalous international precedents ) after their gang proclaimed independence. Russia has unofficial territorial claim towards Georgia. And Kremlin is so afraid of potential Estonian territorial claim! Again, what a big hypocrisy…

"And leave it Spanalot to once more prove he knows nothing"

Like I said, leave it to jb6 to extol the virtues of the Russians still "marketing" more lead in their gasoline.

"Many Central and Eastern European countries are preparing themselves to become members of theEuropean Union and have to meet their requirements for gasoline which includes a phase out of lead.Although, Russia no longer produces leaded gasoline it is still marketed"

Why ethnic Russians who are non-citizens in Baltic states didn’t received Russian citizenship but Ossetians and Abkhazians?

It will rather stabilize the domestic consumption and export levels. There is no reason for consumption going up when prices stay frozen.

You can't take the commie out of the commies.

Makes me a real 'Free Traitor'

The anti free market forces are already converging on this thread to tell us all why we need a state controlled economy.

In a minute they will start calling everyone who embraces freedom a traitor. You will not be exempt.

Makes you wonder why these goofs think anyone will mistake them for conservatives when they readily embrace liberal/commie ideology.

jb6 didn't like it too much when the Serbs were blamed for "genocide" and "ethnic cleansing" but he won't hesitate to employ the very same smear against the Orthodox Christian Georgians.

And it turned out there was no genocide and ethnic cleansing on the part of the Serbs.

Yeah, I'm just forgetting that freedom is slavery and that ignorance is strength.

There was no genocide of Abkhaz by Georgians. There was a war, and Basayev fought on the Abkhaz side, beheading Christian Georgians.

No, they got their citizenship in 2001-2002, 10 years after defeating a Georgian army of 30,000. It was one year after the Georgians hired Gudayov (now dead) and his Chechens to start a war there and give them precedent to re-invade.

Try to get your groups straight, we are talking about the Abhaz not the Ossessians. I'm sure that if Poland asked the Ukrainians to forgive them and come region Poland, you'd get much the same answer.

No, they got their citizenship in 2001-2002,

Doesn’t matter, they Russia should be more interested in their internal affairs. Especially that they themselves have problems with separatists.

Try to get your groups straight, we are talking about the Abhaz not the Ossessians.

Sakasvilli offered wide autonomy to both Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

I'm sure that if Poland asked the Ukrainians to forgive them and come region Poland, you'd get much the same answer.

Nonsense, these lands are internal part of Georgia. Comparison with Poland and Ukraine is invalid.

I'm not crying, I'm delighted to expose leftists on this forum as they advocate state control of the economy.

On the other hand, you statists continue to cry because your communist "5 yr plans" keep failing. As they always have, time and again throughout history. Bad ideas advocated by elitists aren't rare, just relatively uncommon on a site called FREErepublic.

Watching the success of that revolution was rather eye opening, especially the poor people who were going through the piles of trash along with the street dogs, didn't see that 5 years ago, the last time I visited.

Brother Stalin would have put an end to that, eh comrade?
