The chances of Angela Merkel becoming Germany's next chancellor suffered a setback yesterday when the Greens appeared to rule out joining a coalition with her conservative CDU party.

Why would the CDU even want to work with the Greens?

Agreed. Also, when watching these parliamentary elections, I am glad we have the system we do. What a mess.

Agreed, for people here who decry the two party system in this country consider the alternatives. The only way I could ever think about supporting a third party candidate is in a situation where there is a run off between the top two vote getters if no one receives a majority.

Shouldn't the US Press be gasping in horror at their system of choosing a Chancellor as obviously it is a totally insane and flawed system.. Shouldn't we be snickering and saying how much better ours is. Much like Europe did to us in 2000.

Uh huh. A parliamentary system is anarchy wearing a veneer of civility.

"Why would the CDU even want to work with the Greens?"

====

This article explains it. They need 50% of the votes to form a coalition, and even with the pro-business FDP, they don't have it, so they rather have the 8% of the Greens, than team up with Schroeder's party, who wouldn't let them do anything.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1486920/posts

"Merkel had hoped to be able to form a coalition with the business-friendly Free Democratic Party (FDP) under Guido Westerwelle. Despite the FDP's surprising result of 10.2 percent -- against just 7.4 percent in 2002 elections -- the two parties together are far from the 50 percent they would need to form a governing coalition."

If we teased the Germans about their elections, their 'civilized' response would be to burn the Reichstag and blame the neo-cons (codeword for Jooooooos) for it.

"Shouldn't we be snickering..."

Maybe, but the fact is that europe is of little importance to Americans. They have stabbed us in the back to many times for the average American to give a damn what happens to them. Let them roll in their own filth.

Not likely. The CDU would have won if NOT for Angela Merkel. I think they'd rather thrive under Schroeder than squander their goodwill under her.

Agreed. Western Europe (excpet for GB) is an inconsequential sideshow.

They have already demonstrated they don't support us, and have done their best to undermine US interests, and failed miserably. They are incontinent Socialists.

In the German system, the Kanzler must control or have reliably allied a majority of the parliamentary votes. Merkel would (and did, evidently) approach the Greenieweenies in order to put her side's total over 50%.

It would appear that they're in for another vote. Good thing, in some ways, because minority and teensy-majority gov'ts in parliamentary systems such as Germany's have historically been unable to do much of anything, including in many instances even pass a budget.

It sounds awfully like the situation around 1932 or so over there.

Ok everyone, time to point a finger at Germany and laugh. Now it's their turn to show us just how you deal with a hotly contested election with wafer-thin margins. Let's see how long it takes them to get a Kanzler who can do anything.

The single reason that Germany gets the heavy leftist vote is the former East Germany. It can be clearly seen of a map of the votes, like our Blue and Red state version.

All across the south of Germany, they vote conservative. Baden-Wurttemberg and Bavaria.

Perhaps a more wise method of joining the east, would have been to keep them out of the federal government picking business for a few decades.

Because they have mucked up the whole country.

That should give those knuckleheaded krauts plenty of time to bury their heads even deeper in the sand.

I'm gratified that I'm NOT the only paranoid schizophrenic, or is that schitzoid paranoiac, on this site.

The Euroweenies frighten me when they get into this socialist stage. We've all seen it before (a couple of times last century) and WE end up pulling them out of the mess they've created, simply for self-preservation.
