Bush 41: I Still Like Clinton
NewsMax ^ | 9/19/05 | NewsMax

Thirty-six hours after ex-president Bill Clinton bashed and trashed his son on everything from his handling of the Hurricane Katrina crisis to the Iraq war, former president George H.W. Bush says he still likes Clinton.

Appearing during commercial breaks on ABC's "Monday Night Football," the president's father was asked how he and Clinton managed to get along.

"I like him," Bush 41 said, despite the verbal thrashing Clinton administered to his son on ABC's "This Week" the day before.

Given two more opportunities to comment on his relationship with Clinton, Bush Sr. declined to say a single negative word about his successor.

Mr. Clinton, on the other hand, demonstrated no such graciousness when asked on Sunday about the Bush administration's response to Hurricane Katrina.

"You can't have an emergency plan that works if it only affects middle class people and up," Clinton told ABC's "This Week."

He said the allegedly slow federal response disproportionately affected African Americans and was caused by the Bush tax cuts.

"This is a matter of public policy," Clinton told his former communications director, George Stephanopoulos. "And whether it's race-based or not, if you give your tax cuts to the rich and hope everything works out all right, poverty goes up and it disproportionately affects black and brown people."

I HATE Bill Clinton and have from the day he walked onto the stage and it went downhill from there. But he is irrelevant. It is a battle that has already been fought. And, to a large degree won.

Continuing to fight battles that are over...is a sure fire way to loose the battles that are ahead.

This whole episode.just makes Clinton look all the worse. He looks like an ungrateful jerk. Small, petty and stupid by comparison. Actually, it just beautifully showcases his real character. It is a perfect illustration of the man's entire life and it is not lost on the public. They don't necessarily have to have it spelled out for them.

I suspect we'll just have to agree to disagree on this. My opinion is based on having a lot of friends who disagree with me about politics and I know from experience that they respond favorably to people who act like our guys...not theirs. And our message starts to sound pretty good too. FWIW.

"Clinton is tanking Hillary's chances every time he goes on a rampage. Some folks on here don't have a clue!"

Bingo! I imagine Hitlary's getting set to send her flying monkeys after Bill Boy to rein him in. What is even more hilarious is that he is getting chummy with GHWB. Now that is putting Hitlary into closer scrutiny by the chief of intelligence himself, GHWB! I am wondering if Bill Boy is sometimes having losses of time while out on the golf course.

The thing that sticks in my limited mind through out this entire Bush/Clinton love affair is that both men were basically "do nothing" presidents with little or no vision for the country. Now we have a president who is having to pay the price unmercifully on a daily basis for their(Bush Sr./Clinton) inability to lead. Is there mutual guilt on Sr/Clinton's part? Who knows...As a father myself, Bush Sr.'s "loyalty" to his son makes me sick.

I would not put GHWB past the idea of digging Clinton for information. There are ways of getting information without a person aware that you are doing it.

I thing GHWB's age is deceptive, which is what we want.

Something to think about: "Keep your friend close, but keep your enemy closer". GHWB is a close eye on someone who needs to be watched; especially with a wife named Hillary.

It is time for Bush the Elder to present a well thought out half-hour analysis of the Clinton Administration - prefacing his remarks by saying that Pres. Clinton has removed traditional restraints on past presidents, and that is fine by him. There is really no rationale for Bush I
to remain reticent or reluctant. Should he not budge in coming days, then I guess it's up to Barbara to hit him over the head with a 2X4. That will get any Texan moving, including one transplanted from genteel CT.

Actually, Congresswoman M. Waters, D-CA, used to yak all the time about the CIA-cocaine-Mena connection...till Slickmeister appointed her husband, Sidney Williams "Ambassador and Extraordinary and Polplenitentary" to the Bahamas. Now Mr. Williams was in the Automobile biz, No he didn't own a large dealership or even a small one ... he just sold cars.
These days of course Maxine Waters (D) CA, don't talk too much about those issues anymore.
That was many years ago and I now understand the necessity of the events.....
(And daily beg God's forgiveness)

legacy he is so desperately trying to salvage

Billy Boy is not trying to salvage his legacy, we already know what that is, he's trying to make a new one.

If I was George Sr. I'd tell Billy in no uncertain terms to knock it off bashing GW or I'd go public with it. Even if history remembers it or not, I'd want to perserve a good tradition of no bad mouthing sitting or former presidents. And what decent person does not step in to stop the lies? That is what this really boils down to.

Bingo! "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer" GHWB has taken Clinton for more than a ride in Bush's three-engine boat, the Fidelity III.

This simply proves that GHWB has class...

No, actually, it doesn't. It proves that GHWB has the political instincts of a nanny goat. Always did; always will.

I can understand why he wanted to stay out of his son's way during the first term, but this is a time when a strong defense of his son could help. Instead, he refuses to do so but kisses the butt of his own and his son's political enemy. I have lost a huge amount of respect for GHWB.

A couple of weeks ago, in the immediate aftermath of Katrina when his son was being called a racist of the worst kind, GHWB and Barbara were on Larry King and had a perfect opportunity to speak out in defense of their son. Instead, GHWB almost seemed to agree with the critics.

I have not had tv for awhile (by choice). I get a majority of my information from INET news sites and then papers. Most likely I am not as inundated by the MSM message, although their distortions, baiting, and burying of stories bothers me also.

I agree with you that we need to get Islamofascism back in the cage while W. is still in office. I only hope the trend is established by then

Remember too the limitations of the presidency, the checks and balances of govt., the influence of public will or lack thereof.

I don't believe his 'close eye on someone who needs to be watched' is very helpful if he can't bring himself to discredit a liar who is defaming his own son. I agree former President Bush is a 'class act', and Bill Clinton is the one of the biggest scumbags inhabiting the earth today, but I fear Clinton, with the MSM, are damaging President Bush. I would much prefer to see President Bush operating from a base of strength than one of weakness. I fear he has allowed himself to look weak while he has made Clinton look stronger by appointing him to positions where he gets attention. He could have been a first class gentleman by completely ignoring Clinton and Kennedy. Clinton and Kennedy are both uncouth scumbags and will never treat the Bushes with respect....they are proof that 'familiarity breeds contempt'. If GHWB had to say he liked Clinton, I wish he would have added that he was terribly disappointed that Clinton lacked the ability to be a decent and principled former President.
