Five hundred is not a significant contribution. It's a joke. The Sudanese Army numbers 100,000 men in uniform. Add another 100,000 allied paramilitary and militia in an area the size of Texas, and even you might begin to appreciate how inadequate that number is. They'd better snooze.

500 troops is approx. 7% of Mali's armed forces, which is similar to the proportion of American troops (135,000 of approx. 2.2 million active, reserve and nat'l guard)
The Sudanese Army has 60,000 troops.
