TV Interview: Gerhard Schroeder in "intoxicating" form
Various German news sources | 19 Sep, 2005 | Vanity

Posted on 09/19/2005 1:39:13 PM PDT by 12B

This is not showing up in the English-language press, so here’s my vanity:

After the election Gerhard Schroeder made what the press is calling a „bizarre“ appearance on a TV talkshow. Most everyone in my office said he must have been drunk as a lord, although some surmise he may have been on “something else”.

Schröder seemed to think he had won a majority and had the right to form a government. He also sharply attacked both moderators claiming that they had tried to prevent him becoming Chancellor again but had failed. He made other vague accusations of media manipulation of the campaign At one point, one of the moderators refused to address him as Herr Chancellor and began calling him simply Herr Schröder.

The FAZ newspaper very tactfully suggested he may have been drunk, but also speculated (in a tongue in cheek way) that he could have had an “over-release of endorphins” which are comparable to opium. I’m not sure exactly if they were kidding.

The Berliner Zeitung was a bit tougher saying the Chancellor was in some kind of euphoria and compared him to a hash-smoker. It said the Chancellor had taken leave of his senses and that his handlers could just as well have called for two gentlemen in white smocks (ie someone from the looney-bin).

Hessen State Minister Koch called the chancellors appearance a “post-election insanity”.

During the TV program FDP party chairman Guido Westerwelle told the chancellor directly to his face “I’d like to know what you did before the show.”

Political historian Paul Nolte said the chancellor had “abandoned the conventions of political culture” and “appeared as if on drugs”.

The Tagespiegel said the Chancellor was in “a trance”

Anyway, off to bed for me. But I’ll leave you guys with this photo and this question: “Would Officer Friendly let this guy drive home?”

The guy lost by one percent and still claims a mandate. This whole thing sounds like a Cheech and Chong movie.

BMW executive: “This is exactly what the country didn’t need - a long period of uncertainty and negotiations. We will all be losers.”

Nikolaus Schweickart, chief executive of Altana, the pharmaceutical and chemical group: “This election result is a disaster for German business, in the short term and in the long term. A grand coalition seems to be very likely because there is no other realistic alternative. But a grand coalition means deadlock.”

Mitul Kotecha, strategist at Calyon Corporate and Investment Bank. “German political uncertainty taken together with the likelihood of a rate hike from the Fed tomorrow and a hawkish statement regarding the pass through of energy prices, suggests that the euro will remain under downward pressure this week.”

Ian Stannard, currency strategist at BNP Paribas. “The result is the worst possible as far as the euro is concerned as none of the natural coalition groups have enough votes to form a majority government.”

Thorsten Polleit, an analyst at Barclays Capital. “The outcome clearly shows that the German electorate did not deliver a clear mandate to either party to push through reforms, and as we see it, hopes for further far-reaching changes have been severely dampened.”

Chris Rogers, ABN utilities strategist. “The market had priced in nuclear (profit expectations) and then some. There will be an extended period of uncertainty. The best case scenario is for a grand coalition, the worst case would be for the Greens to be in there.”

Calyon Corporate and Investment Bank, “The German election outcome is negative for Central and Eastern European currencies as it’s been adding to the EU political crisis that has been developing since the rejection of the EU constitution.”

I've often wondered why the sheeple do not demand drug testing of their leaders as they require of the sporting and carnival crowd. In Los Angeles, not long ago we had a Councilman busted for chopping lines in City Hall. Apparently now it has infested Burbank city hall. I think the ill wind torched Carson and at least one old crackpipe Mayor is now off to prison.

LOL, Great Post!

I still say Ann Richards was drunk at the '92 dem convention. But, she wasn't running for election.

Nah! It sounds more like an Escalade Al Gore election 2000 redux. Besides, I hear Cheech & Tommy are at each other's throats now.

Of course we Red Necked Conservatives on Free Republic have been wrong in what we have labeled Herr S. The educated ones in Europe, know that Herr S is best for Germany, Europe, the Euro and the World.

Absolutely and don't just test them for illegal drugs. What Rx psycho altering drugs are they on both as per the package insert and outside the insert re indications and doseages.

Oktoberfest is about to start, right?

I used to really love octoberfest from 1959 to 1962, those were the years:) 4 marks to the dollar, bier in huge mugs, and flip top bottles the size of quarts(not to mention it was a lot stronger than amercian beer.) and pretty girls everywhere! Ahhh, but I can imagine it just isn't the same now.

You may ask,"what does this have to do with the post?" and the answer is, "nothing"! but memories will intrude sometimes:)
