Ringo Starr's old house to be taken down and stored as 11 streets are demolished
By Charles Clover, Environment Editor (Filed: 19/09/2005) The house where Ringo Starr was born will be taken down brick by brick and preserved, after an entire quarter of Toxteth is demolished around it, Liverpool City Council has announced. The city's housing chiefs have been bitterly criticised by heritage groups and residents for plans to demolish the first home of the Beatles drummer in the Welsh Streets area.

Saved: the former home of Ringo Starr in Madryn Street

The demolition is part of a £54 million regeneration plan to be funded under John Prescott's housing market renewal initiative. The decision finally brought to an end months of uncertainty over the future of the 11 roads in Toxteth. Flo Clucas, executive member for housing, said: "There has been a lot of speculation about Ringo Starr's former home in Madryn Street. I have asked officers to ensure that the property is taken down and stored." Most of the 60 residents who packed the town hall to hear the decision held bright orange "demolish" posters and cheered at the decision. Heritage groups reacted with disbelief to the decision to demolish the Welsh Streets - including a house ITV's Tonight with Trevor McDonald programme refurbished for £24,000 earlier this year. Dr Peter Brown, chairman of Merseyside Civic Society, said of the council's decision: "For sheer surrealism this beats Yellow Submarine hands down - a ribald letter to the Telegraph months ago suggested as a joke the council take down Ringo's birthplace and re-erect it in their new 'Museum of Liverpool Life'; Cllr Clucas seems to have missed the irony. People like the city's authentic character, not packaged replicas." |

Just noticing in the pic you posted....the garage appears to be empty, they have a nice paved driveway, they have a nicely-kept lawn.
But they park the car on the lawn????

But they park the car on the lawn????And you all wonder why Brian Warner grew up to act like an androgynous, makeup-soaked circus star?
It's all in how you treat your lawn. Remember this if you have kids.

Well, I'm sad to say that I'm just a single guy living in The People's Republic of Seattle, the land of eternal rain, overpriced coffee and unfriendly women.

Seattle, the land of eternal rain, overpriced coffee and unfriendly women.Really? I thought there was an article out recently labeling Seattle as one of the friendliest cities in America. Or is my memory mixing it up with the worst?

It's all in how you treat your lawn. hmmm...there something about lawn care that I've never quite understood.
Why do they put headlights on riding mowers? Is there a large number of people who mow their lawns at night? Just curious.

The women are unfriendly for a reason. It's the lesbian San Francisco.

Maybe that's what they said about Bach or Beethoven. Who cares. Tear it down.

I thought there was an article out recently labeling Seattle as one of the friendliest cities in America. Or is my memory mixing it up with the worst?Well, I've lived here for over 40 years and it's true that years ago Seattle was a friendly place but since it swung so far into hard-Left politics in the late 60's and 70's it's really unfriendly, unless you're a fire-breathing Leftist. NOBODY in this entire county would put a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker on their cars because they know that if they parked it anywhere on the street it would be keyed or worse. Bush/Cheney yard signs resulted in numerous acts of vandalism against homes. If people know that you're Conservative you will NEVER be invited to a party and friends are hard to come by.
"sigh"
I would have moved away from here years ago except for the fact that I have obligations here which make that impossible.
Idaho sounds nice, as does Montana. Every time Texas has been mentioned here at FR it seems that it's because something GOOD has happened there. Everyone from Texas that I've ever met has been really nice, and Lubbock was recently rated the #2 Conservative city in the USA, after Provo, Utah "I think".
Oh well, in the meantime I will consider FR more of a 'home' than Seattle :-)

Seattle is bending over backwards (pardon the imagery) to become absolutely as 'gay friendly' as possible.

Tear it down.Agreed. It doesn't even seem to be any sort of a nice-looking house to begin with.
This near-religious fervor associated with anything pertaining to the Beatles became tiresome a very long time ago.
Now it's sickening.

Yes! What a lovely home. Thanks for the picture.

I wanted to introduce my children to some decent music and picked a selection of Beatles music, including "Yellow Submarine" and others. They listen to it non-stop now. I don't think you can kill classics, and Beatles stand out among most others as "classic".
