Cleveland,Ohio (AHN) - The nominees for the Class of 2006 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is filled with a lot of hold overs from previous years and virtually ignores a truckload of artists that many critics are shaking their heads over.
J.Geils Band, John Mellencamp, the Patti Smith Group, Chic, Joe Tex,Miles Davis, Cat Stevens, Blondie, the Paul Butterfield Band, the Dave Clark Five and the Sir Douglas Quintet will all have a chance to make it into the hall of fame located in Cleveland.
This year also marks the eighth chance for Black Sabbath, Lynyd Skynyrd gets their seventh chance, and the Sex Pistols and the Stooges all of which are on try number five.
Missing from the nomination list again this year include bands like Rush, Van Halen, Yes, Genesis, ELO, Joan Jett, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Heart, Deep Purple, Pat Benatar, and Duran Duran.
Nominees are picked by a 70-member committee of rock 'n' roll historians, journalists and label execs, with ballots then mailed to an international voting body of 700 music industry types for the final decision. The five to seven nominees that receive the most votes will be inducted into the Rock Hall next year.
Poor Brian
Great pix, Dennis. Even the Stones look almost innocent there (even though they weren't.) A fun time -- reminds me of seeing them on Ed Sullivan's show doing "Time Is On My Side." Loved those ringing guitars in "It's All Over Now." And "Last Time." Sigh.
The Strawberry Alarm Clock and The Lovin' Spoonful played at our high school in CT in the late 60's ( I was born in '52 BTW ) !
Yeah, they really need to let Skynyrd.
It's because the ARE DEVO!
Man, your high school had a nice band budget!! I've got two years on you -- we had rumors that we were going to get Mitch Ryder, who was appearing locally (outside Philly) but it never happened. We did have a group at our school called Woodys Truck Stop, one of whose members was Todd Rundgren (who was at a different school.)
The Spoonful had tons of hits -- "Do You Believe In Magic" still sounds pretty fresh -- I used to like the dreamy "Rain On The Roof" too -- but what did the Clock do after "Incense and Peppermints?" Although, as the mind kicks in, I recall one they did called "Tomorrow." Gene Pitney was a CT boy, right? Who else did you guys have?
"A town without pity"
Hee hee -- and "Liberty Valence" and "Half Heaven, Half Heartache" and "It Hurts To Be In Love" and "Only Love Can Break A Heart" and "I'm Gonna Be Strong" and "Last Exit To Brooklyn" and many many more. He was a hit-making machine!!
Gene Pitney played piano on a few Stone's tunes.
We certainly have discussed many memorable songs.
Well, that is news to me. Never heard that. I know he wrote "Hello Mary Lou" for Rick Nelson, but that's a long way from the Stones. Love those historical oddities! Kind of like Jimi Hendrix doing guitar work for Little Richard in his early days.
We sure have, NYA. And some not-so-memorable ones, too!!
Is there any fact to the rumor that Rod Stewart played the harmonica for Sonny and Chers "Baby don't go"?
I have heard Nuge's version of that, bob. Great stuff.
Never heard that one, NYA. But I'm willing to believe almost anything! I do know that Neil Sedaka as a high schooler played bells on a mid-50s doo wop song called "Church Bells May Ring" by The Willows. But not many people care about that!
Just wondered if anybody else out there remembers a song from Barry and the Tamerlanes called "I Wonder What She's Doing Tonight?" Not the song of the same title by Boyce and Hart, this is a different one. Or another one few remember, "She's The One" by The Chartbusters. Both were Top 40 nationally, but largely forgotten today.
That goes back to Don Cherry, Coasters, Cadilacs and others time frame.
The Coasters were great!!
