Cleveland,Ohio (AHN) - The nominees for the Class of 2006 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is filled with a lot of hold overs from previous years and virtually ignores a truckload of artists that many critics are shaking their heads over.

J.Geils Band, John Mellencamp, the Patti Smith Group, Chic, Joe Tex,Miles Davis, Cat Stevens, Blondie, the Paul Butterfield Band, the Dave Clark Five and the Sir Douglas Quintet will all have a chance to make it into the hall of fame located in Cleveland.

This year also marks the eighth chance for Black Sabbath, Lynyd Skynyrd gets their seventh chance, and the Sex Pistols and the Stooges all of which are on try number five.

Missing from the nomination list again this year include bands like Rush, Van Halen, Yes, Genesis, ELO, Joan Jett, Def Leppard, Alice Cooper, Heart, Deep Purple, Pat Benatar, and Duran Duran.

Nominees are picked by a 70-member committee of rock 'n' roll historians, journalists and label execs, with ballots then mailed to an international voting body of 700 music industry types for the final decision. The five to seven nominees that receive the most votes will be inducted into the Rock Hall next year.

That song has been covered by every band that ever plugged a Stratocaster into a Marshall.

I skipped a chance to see his act. Always regretted it. Got to see Janis, Cream and Jeff Airplane in their prime, tho.

Hit the nail on the head right there. Politics.

Plus, if a band puts any virtuosity and progressive elements into their songs, critics go nuts because they can't play the stuff.

Most critics are wannabe musicians who have a 3 year old mentality when it comes to composition and playing skills.

Again to emphasize, if critics can't play it then it's labeled crap.

Because he hated America. It fits their format.

NO ONE did "Hey Joe" better than Hendrix, but a lot of people tried!

They should include Van Morrison in the nominations. His version of Gloria is a classic.

I agree, Fresh Wind, Jimi took it to a different level. I still have a soft spot for versions by Tim Rose, The Leaves and The Byrds. And, of course, the version our band did in high school!!

I believe that Johnny Rivers is still excluded from the RRHOF for his political beliefs.

I was curious about this statement, and googled around to the JR fan forum. Here is an excerpt:

"JR has never been a part of the counter culture....you know what I mean....the Rolling Stone Magazine types. If JR had been arrested for indecent exposure on stage, if he had done drugs and gotten crazy on stage, if he had been busted at an airport for concealing dope, the liberal music medial would have been in love with JR. Scandal sells....people like to see people hit the skids and fall from grace. That's one show that JR has never performed. The HOF committee is primarily the same Rolling Stone crowd with the same dope smokin' mentality. They wouldn't know a good song or artist if it hit them in the face. But I'm sure they'd accept a bribe from a record company that was willing to pay up. Damn, JR ain't gonna do that either. JR is today's equivilant of a straight laced conservative. They wouldn't want to have someone with business saavy and a little class in the HOF. I read Ben Fong Torres' article about JR a year or so ago. Ben's wife was dancing with some friends to JR's music. Ben couldn't believe how great JR sounded and that he didn't appreciate him back in the 60's. Sorry Ben, all that smoke in your office kept you from witnessing a great rock and roll performer....he just wasn't cool enough for you then."

Johnny Rivers fan message board

PS---for Skynyrd not to be in the HOF is a joke and that alone discredits the farce that HOF is. gg

The Seeds...Tobacco Road..from Electric Pipedreams

You seem very confident in that, but I recall it was the Nashville Teens who first made John Loudermilk's song a R&R hit. But there are many who have put this classic on their albums:

Tobacco Road

I hope that wasn't the marching band! Did you ever see that compilation album of a bunch of different versions of "Louie Louie"? They even had a cut of a marching band playing that timeless classic!

Current HoF members are not eligible for induction.
