Police Fortify Numbers for War Protests - March to Be First Since D.C. Passed Arrest Law
Washington Post.com ^ | Sunday, September 18, 2005 | Del Quentin Wilber

D.C. police have canceled days off and are planning to deploy several hundred officers during an antiwar demonstration next weekend that will include a march near the White House, but officials said they expect no trouble.

Saturday's rally, part of a weekend of protests and counter-protests, will be the first demonstration allowed to surround the White House in more than a decade. It is the first major rally to occur since a D.C. law that requires police to give clear warnings before arresting demonstrators took effect.

Passed in response to the much-criticized mass arrests of protesters at a downtown park in 2002, the law also restricts the use of police lines to contain nonviolent demonstrators and requires that police wear clearly identifiable badge numbers. Police also may not stop spontaneous rallies -- as long as such incidents do not clog sidewalks or violate traffic laws -- by arresting demonstrators for protesting without a permit.

Organizers said they are mobilizing nationwide for what could be the largest war protest since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq more than two years ago. Various coalitions are organizing buses, vans and carpools to bring in protesters from across the country.

"We can anticipate 100,000 people," said Cmdr. Cathy Lanier, who supervises the police department's special operations division. "There will be mothers, grandmothers and children -- a huge, diverse group. They are very peaceful. We have been meeting with them regularly."

I would imagine they will have more than 1000 lefites out there. They seem to be a lot more motivated than a lot of freepers these days. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1485881/posts

Isn't there talk about some of the anti's trying to scale the fence at the WH for this one? If so, I hope the cops have the buckshot at the ready.

The police will fortify their numbers, and the MSM will fortify the numbers of the protestors.

No, this will be a large march. I do NOT agree with the march, but you have to be living in a cave, or in FR, to stil think this is a wildly popular war. Happy to be proved wrong, but I think 100,000 people is a fair, if not conservative, estimate.

I'm pro-War.

Are we now undermining the troops if we acknowledge that a sizeable minority are against them? But, yeah, if it makes you feel better let's all agree that there are only few tens of thousands of folk against the war and all go to bed.

"We can anticipate 100,000 people,"

All being supported by the American tax payers. It must be nice not to have anything else to do but hang out in Washington and bitch about everyone and everything all day.
Shouldn't they be out looking for a job or something a little more productive? Why aren't they volunteering to work in the soup kitchens or picking up trash along the highways? At least they'd be doing SOMETHING to earn their keep!

I'm not a troll. Any polls from any news sources that suggest at least 30% of the country isn't in favor of us being in Iraq? If you can show that this is a popular war then I'll agree that there will be waaaaaay under 100,000 people on that march. And then we can all see what happens. Reality is what it is, denying it just wastes time.

If Soros was paying and transporting college kids to support Bush, we'd have just as many. Money talks.

So what if there are 100,000? There is not, nor will there ever be, a sustainable anti-war movement against Iraq because the college kids are not involved. Most of the demonstrators will be old washed-up hippies and liberal feminists, along with the usual rag-tag assortment of gays, enviros, and anarchists.

I'd suspect Bush will be at Camp David or out of town to avoid the aggravation.

Any poll on any conservative subject has that demented 30%. Hell, even Hillary got 30%! Those loons are always bitching about something.

A lot of them are dumb kids who go protesting like they're Trick-or-Treating. Those other activities you mention call for discipline, generosity, and hard work. Many, many times the dumb kids can't tell you what they're protesting or why. Others are hate-filled slugs. I'm missed some categories but those two are my favorites.

I couldn't guess what the anti-war protesters's numbers will be, but I commend our law enforcement for their professionalism and patience in dealing with them.

There are useful idiots from every one of Hillary's villages showing up at those things. People used to pay to see these freak shows at the carnivals, but now they get to see them for free, and it's cheap entertainment for the kids.

Popular opinion shouldn't drive national defense policy. Fortunately W feels the same. BTW 1/3 of the population didn't support the Declaration of Independence.

Didn't 250,000 pro-lifers show up this year in D.C.? What's that tell you?
