Library decides to keep gay publications
Associated Press
UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio - A suburban Columbus library has decided to keep two free periodicals catering to gays despite pressure to remove the publications that some opponents decried as lewd and obscene.
Library trustees unanimously voted to keep Outlook Weekly and Gay People's Chronicle on shelves, but decided to move the publications to an area of the library where they would not be easily accessible by children.
Opponents shouted down library officials and read passages from the publications that they claimed were offensive during a public discussion at the library Tuesday. Some people had to be escorted from the meeting by police.
The protesters said they coordinated the readings of the articles to draw attention to the issue.
"Ours is a community of high standards and values," said Bruce Cameron, a 33-year resident of Upper Arlington. "The materials are lewd, salacious, lascivious - and a bunch of other big words of legal significance - but in normal parlance, disgusting, obscene and pornographic."
Board members said the publications also cover political and social issues, and do not meet standards to define pornography.
"We are a public library receiving tax dollars and have an obligation to provide materials and not censor those materials on a content basis," said trustee John Burtch.
Wonder if these library board members are elected or appointed.
Whatever happened to a public library carrying and promoting positive and life affirming books and periodicals.
Does the library carry Playboy? Playboy discusses politics and social issues too. (rolling eyes)
Must be for the long articles.
Excuse me. Where does the library get its money? Don't tell me they buy every publication written in the English language that gets published each year. They only buy a small fraction of them. Ultimately why should it be up to the library board and not the city council that pays to run the library and acquire books to determine what is bought?
Is the library going to have a sodomite section.
As a nearby resident, let me tell you, they could afford to buy every one of them. Old money in UA, along with new yuppie corporate cash and a number of OSU types.
Homosexual Agenda Ping.
Many libraries are hotbeds of uberliberalism. I've personally seen librarians practically tremble with rage at the mere mention of Ann Coulter's name. Pornography is one of the causes dear to their hearts, and if it's "gay", so much the better.
I've seen stuff in libraries - just while scanning shelves - that would have been illegal anywhere just a few decades ago. There is no reason whatsoever to have pornography in libraries.
My idea is for people to start private libraries - each subscriber can pay a certain amount to join, or per year, or a little per each book borrowed. People can donate books, and/or the monies collected can be used to buy the kind of books the library members want to read. Any kind of private groups could do this. That's how libraries started, anyway.
What a lame excuse:
"We are a public library receiving tax dollars and have an obligation to provide materials and not censor those materials on a content basis," said trustee John Burtch.
So they have an obligation to force feed homosexual pornography on an unwilling (and tax paying) public??? Somehow it just doesn't make sense.
Freepmail me AND DirtyHarryY2K if you want on/off this pinglist.
That would involve religion and conservatism. Ain't gonna fly with public employees.
They're lying. Every library has limited funds and they pick and choose what books and periodicals to purchase. It's called "making choices". They're CHOOSING to provide homosexual pornography. The fact that it is free is irrelevant. I bet there are other free publications they choose not to provide.
Exactly, but you know that the NOW gang would be up in arms if they did and get good and positive press coverage.
I'm not saying that the library should carry playboy either, but the liberal bias is there.

of course..it is always there...lol.
"...and a bunch of other big words of legal significance..."
LOL, I like that! I must remember to use it someday.
Something really not relevant but very ironic.
(Liberal)Trustee John Burtch(Birch), as in the pronounciation of the John Birch Society.
I'm surprised to hear the library trustee admit that the library is using taxpayer's money. The librarians I know pretend the money doesn't have a source. That way they don't feel accountable to anyone.
It's also ironic that his name is John Burtch. I wonder if he gets kidded by the library lefties about the John Burtch (Birch) Society.

The library will carry books about perversion (containing who knows what) , but if you flash someone on the street, you go to jail. I guess there is some type of invisible line where on one side, perversion is OK, on the other it is not...double standard??
