Woman in power is powerless when it comes to meeting men
http://www.mcall.com/ ^ | September 17, 2005 | Amy Alkon

Dear Amy: I'd like to be in a relationship again, but I never even get asked out (unless you count frisky 85-year-olds and drunks at the corner bar). I'm a 32-year-old woman who's happy, sociable, and attractive. (I paid for college by modeling and continue to take care of myself.) I'm second-in-command at a big company, financially secure, and own a beautiful home. How can I meet men in general, and more specifically, men I'd actually want to date?

Deluxe Chopped Liver

Dear Deluxe: To scare away vampires, it takes garlic and crosses, which make ugly bulges in sleek, satin evening bags. Luckily, all you have to do to scare away men is pull out a business card that says ''senior vice president.''

''Power is the ultimate aphrodisiac,'' said Henry Kissinger. Sure it is — unless you're a woman. Research by Stephanie L. Brown and Brian P. Lewis, published in Evolution and Human Behavior (Nov. '04), seems to confirm what many lonely women at the top already know: When guys go for the woman in the boardroom, it isn't the woman running the meeting but the secretary who wheeled in the coffee and croissants before it started.

Sure, plenty of men will scamper up the corporate ladder for a one-night stand. But, according to Brown and Lewis' study, men looking for dates or relationships tend to prefer their subordinates to their colleagues or bosses. The researchers hypothesize that men evolved to want women they can control as a means of guarding against ''parental uncertainty'' — unwittingly raising kids fathered by the Neanderthal next door as their own. Brown and Lewis think this may also explain why men are suckers for ''behavioral expressions of vulnerability'' — women who act like they might not be able to make it across the street

I should explain a touch further what I am looking for...while in theory, what you're saying sounds reasonable, what I am hoping for is a moment: when my father met my mother, he had instant knowledge that this was the person he would spend his life with. The same holds true for my grandparents. I've seen other couples to whom this knowledge came. And while there are obvious hiccups down the road to love, this knowledge was correct.

I would gladly travel to Vietnam if I thought I would experience that. I would not travel as someone merely "sizing up" a bride.

Regards, Ivan

Men who are honest with themselves know this. Those that refute this are lazy, scared or both.

I'm refuting it and I'm not lazy or scared. As a matter of fact, I'm working on my 15th year of marriage.

First, I will need a five-year research grant, then about a dozen fellow researchers, a posh set of offices...

That won't help me much. Another thread I saw yesterday stated that I'll be too old in 5 years.

I forgot what town you live in, but I do know this. Arizona is an awesome state.

But 96 degrees is too cool for you! Holy smokes! :o)

Slight difficulty. I live 65 miles away from London. ;)

Too bad it is in England. Here in Arizona, we consider 65 miles to be next door.

"Very good. I feel like one of the few women who has actually seen the light in this area. Most women have less of a clue about men than men have about women."

A reasonably attractive and reasonably intelligent woman can have just about any man she wants just by being attentive. The shock is so great to men that it's like deer in the headlights.

Of course if you're packing 240 lbs and are working on your GED, it's goig to be tough no matter what. Yet, they don't seem to have been bred out of the population.

I may be in love. Send me a photo...of the bass boat.

"Not all female lawyers are like that. I know from experience."

I was talking more to the stereotype. I've had two female lawyer girlfriends, who are unfortunately long gone.

A little condesending aren't we. I imagine most companies could survive quite well without 30 vice presidents and other window dressing executives but just let them try to get by without secretaries and assistants.
As for meeting men I don't have much of a problem, mine comes home every night and the 24 year marriage seems to be working. Funny thing is I did not have to dumb myself down or play helpless to attract him. Honestly to put a simple spin on things as Jeff Foxworthy said " all men want one thing. To see a woman naked and to have a beer". Work with that motto and you will have em lining up.

***Some people meet at church others meet at the frozen food section of the grocery store. Get your nose down where it belongs and it shouldnt be a problem.***

Actually, I only date men I meet at church and this is still a problem! I just think most men are really insecure with a woman who 1) has more education that they do and 2) makes more money than they do. It's sad really because I have no desire to put these men in their place or override their authority as the head of the family.
