Kline's plan: Reagan's face in your wallet [Reagan on $50 bill]
Star Tribune ^ | September 17, 2005 | Aaron Blake

Posted on 09/17/2005 12:54:50 AM PDT by West Coast Conservative

Ronald Reagan has an airport, an aircraft carrier and buildings around the nation named for him, but his admirers aren't through. As the 25th anniversary of the beginning of the Reagan Revolution approaches, Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., is proposing legislation to put the late president on the $50 bill.

"Not all of America uses Ronald Reagan airport, but all of America uses our currency," Kline said. "We have used currency to commemorate great leaders in our past. It seemed to me this was a good way to do it."

But Rep. Jim Oberstar, D.-Minn., calls Kline's proposal "a fatuous idea."

"We could, as I proposed during the debate about adding 'Reagan' to Washington National Airport, name the unnamed Bureau of the Public Debt for Ronald Reagan," Oberstar said, because Reagan did more to expand the national debt than any previous president.

Kline's connection

Honoring Reagan is personal for Kline. During Reagan's presidency, he carried the nuclear "football," a briefcase containing nuclear launch codes that follows the president almost everywhere.

The faces on Federal Reserve notes haven't changed since they were standardized in 1929.

The current $50 bill honoree, Ulysses S. Grant, was plagued by scandal during his presidency. He is best known for his role as chief Union general in the Civil War. But Grant scholar Marie Kelsey of the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth says Grant's reputation has stood the test of time, while Reagan is benefiting from an outpouring of nostalgia in the aftermath of his 2004 death.

"Grant is really, in my opinion, a far more important person than Reagan, considering that he saved the Union," said Kelsey, who has written a Grant bibliography due out at the end of the month.

Ronald Reagan has an airport

It took the People's Republic of Arlington County two years to change their public transportation signs. IIRC, it was done only under threat of litigation?

I don't like the idea of trashing old icons to make way for the new. Some day there'll be a $200 bill, probably within the next 50 years. Give Reagan that. His legacy is not going to fade or be forgotten, he will be standing even taller when the history books are written from a distance.

An unseemly rush - like that for the beatification of Mother Theresa - only seems to suggest that we doubt they're the real thing and that their achievements and reputations will stand the test of time.

What's fatuous is the idea that liberals care about the debt or about identifying politicians with public works or money.

After all, everything in West Virginia is named after the right honorable Robert KKK Byrd. The Robert KKK Byrd highway flows right through the Roberty KKK Byrd Tech Corridor, which, so far as I can tell, is about as technological as mountains and fog.
