Moulton mayor charged with theft and perjury [Katrina scam at Texas Wal-Mart]
Victoria Advocate ^ | September 16, 2005 | JASON COLLINS

BREAKING NEWS (Updated 5:15 p.m.):

MOULTON - Moulton Mayor Kathleen Koranek Prasek was arrested Friday morning on two misdemeanor warrants accusing her of taking a 12-year-old girl to Wal-mart and falsely claiming the girl was a Hurricane Katrina evacuee.

The 51-year-old Moulton woman is charged with theft, a Class B misdemeanor, and perjury, a Class A misdemeanor. She was released from the Lavaca County Jail after posting bail totaling $2,000.

The charge of theft carries a punishment range up to 180 days and up to a $2,000 fine. The perjury charge carries a punishment range up to one year and a fine up to $4,000.

Prasek declined to comment on the charges, referring all questions to her attorney, Bill Caraway.

Caraway said he would not comment on specifics until he has seen the charges against her.

“I will be happy to after I have seen that,” Caraway said. “It is up to the county attorney when they have the file in order and they have an open file policy here.” He said he expects to review the case sometime next week.

Hallettsville Police Chief Randy Schlauch said his office received the case Sept. 6, the day after Prasek and the girl went to the Hallettsville store asking for help.

“She was allegedly requesting assistance from Wal-mart for a Katrina family victim,” Schlauch said. “Wal-mart was well aware she was the mayor.”

Schlauch knew the girl was not from Louisiana, the chief said. “The (girl’s) family has been renting a house from her since before Katrina,” Schlauch said.

A store employee gave the girl a $100 gift certificate to Brookshire Brothers and about $50 in assorted store merchandise, including diapers.

“It wasn’t what I would consider out of the ordinary for the family. It is obvious the items she was getting were not for herself,” Schlauch said. “They were fixin' to get more.”

When the girl’s mother learned how the items were obtained, she called Moulton law enforcement. However, since the offense occurred in Hallettsville, the investigation was transferred there.

The perjury accusation stems from a statement she gave under oath to law enforcement. Details about that statement were not being released.

The two misdemeanor warrants were issued Thursday and Schlauch turned herself in Friday.

Why the misdemeanor charges and not felony? It's the mayor for pete's sake.

My first guess was Alabama/Florida line vicinity. First hit on Google suggests that it is Texas.

I'm glad I'm not the only one in the dark. Sure would be nice if posters would make sure it's known when they post. Not meaning you. Heck, you're in AL and even you don't know. LOL No way some poor idiot in Denver would automatically know where this is.

Moulton is just north of Shiner.

I thought the Texas Wal-Mart would have been a clue!;^)

No problem, I'm just ragging on you. For that matter, I don't know where Shiner is either. Texas Wal-Mart should have been a clue but I was scanning the post and missed it. Sorry.

I'm almost certain that wasn't in the original title when I posted my reply. Almost certain.

There has to be a lot more to this story. Why would a mayor take a 12 y/o for things like this? It didn't sound like the stuff was for herself.

It's an area where the best (1-2A) cross country runners compete:')

Moulton, Texas is about halfway between Flatonia and Shiner.

I'm must glad you're not a poodle. Poodles are difficult to understand and rarely know where they are.

I hope your cross country runners are not running away from Oklahomans. That would be quite embarrassing.

"Nestled below the triangle of Houston, Austin and San Antonio is the tiny town of Shiner, home to the Spoetzle Brewery. Now, Shiner Beer, Spoetzle’s main product of almost 100 years, isn’t anything special. In fact, when I was a youngin’ in High School, we’d guzzle Shiner only because a twelve-pack cost $2.75. Like any cheap beer, if it’s cold enough you can drink it without wincing. Basically, Shiner is a step down from Lone Star and one step up from Buckhorn. But their classic Shiner Bock is a God given blessing." ~ Belly Buddy Mike Best

Do you realize how many trivia contests you could win with this? I hope Governor Perry has a commendation for you.

Weren't we informed during the 90's that no one is ever prosecuted for perjury? If I recall correctly, everyone lies to authorities.
