San Francisco -- Gay rights activists are lobbying Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to come out against a pair of proposed constitutional amendments that would ban same-sex marriage in California and revoke the spousal rights already granted to domestic partners.
Schwarzenegger has signaled he intends to veto a bill passed by the Legislature this month that would have legalized same-sex marriage. Though hopeful his mind can be changed before the Oct. 9 veto deadline, leaders of Equality California, the state's largest gay rights group, said they also plan to use a meeting with the governor's staff next week to press for Schwarzenegger's stated opposition to the amendments headed for the June 2006 ballot.
"I'm hopeful he will come out against the amendments every day, but I would like to see him do it before he vetoes" the gay marriage bill, said Geoffrey Kors, Equality California's executive director.
Schwarzenegger spokeswoman Margita Thompson said the meeting does not mean Schwarzenegger has strayed from his stand that it should be up to the courts or voters, not the Legislature, to decide whether gays and lesbians should be allowed to marry. As far as the governor's office is concerned, the same-sex marriage issue isn't even on the agenda, Thompson said.
"This will not change the governor's decision to veto this piece of legislation," she said.

That seems clear enough.
2% of the demented populace driving our politics. Our founding fathers are rolling in their graves.
Mark Leno, a homosexual from San Francisco, got this legislation through the DEMOCRAT state legislature.
I sure hope Arnie gets his REDISTRICTING measure approved on the ballo this fall. It's the ticket to rid the state of yearly DE FACTO, Democrat, knee-jerk, liberal legislatures.
The will of a few, change the will of many. We have seen it many, many times with school prayer, etc.
In fact it is the legislature that should make these decisions. However, as the dutifully elected chief exec of the state, you have the prerogative to reject the legislature's bill. The courts should be the last one concerned.
However, since CA has I&R and the people have already spoken, the legislators in this case should be run out of town!

Do you really think that redistricting would make Mark Leno lose his seat?
You're right. And the CA GOP has the perfect opportunity to target and expose each and everyone of them in their next election for totally ignoring a vote by the people (Prop 22).

I read they were delaying it so their activists can call and try to sway him. It ain't over until the ink is on the paper. I've called a couple times now to support his vetoes and counteract the leftist moves.
Anyone got a California ping list?
If you want on/off the ping list let me and little jeremiah know.
Duh, how many times does CA need to vote on this anyway??? The People, as Arnold said, SAID NO!! Veto away Governator!!
Do you know, is there anyway for the legislature out there to override a veto???
Not without Republican help. It took every Democrat to pass this with virtually no Republican votes. When they tried to pass this earlier, it was defeated. However the dirty-tricksters took another, unrelated bill, gutted it, and put the homosexual marriage language in it. That's how they were able to resurrect this abomination.
Not a snowball's chance in H - E - double hockey sticks.
Yes, but it hasn't happened in so long that even I can't remember.
It won't happen with the Governator either. It WOULD cost him his re-election.
He goes DIRECTLY to the California voters and tells them to FAX, write, e-mail and call their legislators. It's a hoot. It works.
The legislators get SO PISSED at him. That WOULD be the Democrat legislators, of course.
