how difficult would it be to do everything manually, on a commercial plane?

Well, how good of a pilot is one?

That is bringing discussion on this issue back to square one. ; )

If I were in a position of having to safely bring an airliner to a destination, I would be much more effective in doing so by allowing the aircraft and it's systems fly the aircraft all the way to touchdown on the runway via auto throttle for I would be much more effective in running the equipment that I would be hand flying the aircraft.

Indeed!

Or in other words: To "safely bring an airliner to a destination" is, of course, effectively flying the plane in a manner for which it was intended...as the equipment and programming is, naturally, based upon the presumption that the aircraft would be landing....safely. : )

Therefore, one must assume that exceptionally skilled pilots must be used to forego this natural supposition.

BINGO!

No matter how much time pilots spend drinking coffee and uploading real time news ect., heaven help the passengers who are on board an aircraft which experiences the "out of the norm" situation without a seasoned pilot on board who knows what to do to counter the situation!

He got caught only because he was too stupid to pay for the airline industry stuff.

Dumber than a box of rocks.

A prime suspect to convince that terrorism is a viable option.

Through this exercise, I have gained a greater understanding of the demands on a pilot as well as am more appreciative for what they do. I hadn't realized the difficulty involved.

Thank you for your patient explanations for the mechanically handicapped. :O)

My point is that terrorist are every where.

I agree. And the vast majority of them are not Islamic.

...could be done in a few keystrokes on the FMS if he had inside knowledge.

Apparently he didn't however for he couldn't even shut off the auto pilot disconnect horn which is a simple push of a button on the control yoke.

True, not even "hours of FMS training" would have taught him that. Neither would Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Apples and oranges anyway. None of the hijackers on any of the aircraft had complete training-- but they had enough to get the job done. And the "autopilot off" alert is only an annoyance that doesn't interfere with the performance of the airplane in any way. For all we know the other airplanes may have had the "autopilot off" alert sounding continuously, right up to the time they hit the towers.

"I agree. And the vast majority of them are not Islamic."

So the vast majority of terrorists are of what religion then?

Look at the Demographic stats for rape, murder, and theft in this country last year. We have no less than seven 9/11's every year just counting murder. Look at the gang (which terrorize communites across the country daily) membership statistics at the BJS.

The answer is "everyone else".

The sad fact is that if you see a group of young Muslim men on the corner, or a group of young say .. young Mexican men on the corner ... you are statistically more likely to be harmed by the Mexican men (or any other group for that matter) than the Muslims.

Obessing about the minority threat does not make America safer. It actually does the opposite.

I'd like to think that it takes more than wearing a pilot's uniform to get past security and into the cockpit of an airliner. Pleast tell me I'm not wrong about this.

Yes, and of course, he would also need the employee badge, and a scheduled flight on which to fly (an airliner needs to be ready). Then of course, the real scheduled pilot would wonder who the **** the guy in his seat is, the co-pilot would wonder who the **** the guy next to him is. I don't think it's ever happened in this country on a commercial airliner, and probably won't.

It would require a vertiable comedy of errors on absolutely everyone's part for this scheme to succeed.

I mean, it would be almost as hard to pull this off as entering the country illegally. And everyone knows how difficult that is.

There are lots of these al Queda monsters in the US. It was only by sheer blessed luck this one was caught.

Virtually every college receives Federal funding. Would it be too much for the Feds to pass a law whereby the government funding would be witheld from any school that does not check the immigration of any foreign national student?

Except the common crimminal isn't likely to set off a nuke, or poison water/food with biotoxins, or spray a stadium full of people with a nerve-agent laden cropduster, or set off a "dirty" bomb in some city's downtown area etc...a Muslim terrorist is. The concentration on Muslims is to prevent such massive disasters from occuring. Halting illegal immigration and severely limiting legal immigration being two solid steps in that direction. Summarily deporting all Muslim non-citizens would be another good move.

Give me a break.....an Arab in the US trying to pick up women impersonating an airline pilot...now that would be weird, but, the nuts are all around us.

Quite common, actually, as corroborated by postings on another thread about this story.

I suggest we strap his sorry ass into the SNORT at China Lake and give him a little ride down the track with, say, an ejection seat experience at the end with a brick wall in front.

Do you recommend this punishment for everyone who orders merchandise fraudulently, or is this for the immigration violation?

The typical leftie thinking here is quite disturbing...like,
Having a gun makes you a murderer. Or,
Wanting to be a pilot makes you a terrorist.

Accused? Guilty.
What a wonderful world. Uncle Joe would be proud.

IMHO, this joker should have been booted long ago for the immigration violation. But unless there's actual evidence that he was not just looking to be a pilot (Why the leather flight jacket and "Ups and Downs of Takeoffs and Landings," for example?), then I'm not so sure execution is warranted. Do we really want such a society? Is there any problem with finding someone guilty before stringing them up, or has Gitmo gotten everyone salivating too much?
