KENNER, La. - Merlene Maten undoubtedly stands out in the prison where she has been held since Hurricane Katrina. The 73-year-old church deaconess, never before in trouble with the law, now sleeps among hardened criminals. Her bail is a stiff $50,000. Her offense? Police say the grandmother from New Orleans took $63.50 in goods from a looted deli the day after Katrina struck.....

I have addressed everything in your message that I intend to address. You're wasting your typing fingers if you think I am going to respond further to your screed.

She doesn't have a case against NOPD or Nagin, since she was arrested in Kenner, Jefferson Parish, LA. She may have a case against mayor Capitano and Kenner police dept.

Yup...hit and run....can't respond because it would expose you.

But I'm a "hater"...yup.

Lol...nice to see another "fraud" exposed, and his fellow travelers here.

Thanks...I'm not familiar enough witn the area to know the differences...but had I paid more attention to the details, I should have seen that.

Sorry, I was more concerned with the JBT Defense Posse here

Why don't more of the good cops speak out about the bad apples?

Your characterization of cops by calling the "blue brotherhood" crap, accusing them of getting politicians off and allowing fellow LEO's families out of tickets is showing how much you don't like cops.

I don't think anyone is defending the cop (not sure if it is NOPD or not) that arrested this old lady, or the ones that looted. I think most people know that the NOPD is one of the most corrupt departments in the country, but there were those that served with dignity down there despite loosing their homes and worrying about family.

Blanket statements like "blue brotherhood crap" or the often used "thin blue line crap" give people the impression you are anti-law enforcement.

You mean the N.O. police actually arrested a looter? Amazing.

She probably wasn't black, which made it okay.

This seams to be like the discussions of Illegals from Mexico in that any criticism of ILLEGALS is equated to criticism of ALL IMMIGRANTS. Just in this case change ILLEGALS to BAD COPS and ALL IMMIGRANTS to ALL COPS.

I know quite a few cops in several cities, counties and states and most (if not all of them) will let off friends/family from traffic tickets.

Saying something bad about some cops doesn't mean that all cops are bad.

Well, at least she wasn't in mortal danger. The NO cops (judging by their behaviour here) are amateurs; if they shoot at her, likely they don't hit her.

It is much different when, er, pros shoot though. (say it fast)

;^)

I saw your tag-line I remember Matt Maupin, what is his status? I don't think I ever heard a follow up.

>> starvation doesn't set in in 1 day..& deli food doesn't keep in the open. <<

BZZZZT!!!
Wrong on both counts!
1. Given the odd proprosition she actually WAS looting, she probably was getting food for her sick HUSBAND to eat; She was also diabetic, and therefore prone to illness if her blood sugar ran low. Either person may have suffered significant harm from going even a day or two without eating; and there was a significant likelihood of going several more days without eating.

2. Most deli foods (balogna, salami, ham, sausages, etc.) are *cured* foods. They are called that because traditionally they have massive amounts of nitrates or salt added to prevent spoilage over long periods of time. Certain varieties of deli food no longer have sufficient curing to keep very long; compare typical supermarket ham to traditional hams (prosciutto, real virginia ham, or "country ham") and you'll find that the typical supermarket ham is a lot less salty. But if I wanted to grab high-protein food that would last for several days in the heat without spoiling, he first place I would head to would be the salami counter in the deli. (And yes, protein is what best maintains blood sugar levels.)

"Yup...hit and run....can't respond because it would expose you. "

Oh, here I am. I'm not gone. I choose not to respond to blind screeds, generally, except in a few words.

I don't know what I'd be exposed as. I'm just a 60-year-old man who has worked for himself since 1974. I have no connection, whatever, to law enforcement.

Most cops I have met, in my life, have been decent, honest people, doing a job that most are not willing to do. I have no doubt that there are bad cops. Such should be thrown off the force at a minimum or jailed if they commit crimes.

I don't know about any "brotherhood," frankly, since I don't know all that many cops.

I do know, however, that your language in general regarding LEOs brands you pretty clearly. That's your deal, not mine.

See ya!

It said from a deli. I don't think major appliances are available in a deli.

I didn't think looters were held accountable for taking food during a major disaster.

No news on Matt. President Bush keeps in contact with his parents in Ohio. Matt is still listed as MIA/POW.

Matt and my son were in the same unit in Iraq. My son came home on Thanksgiving day of last year and Matt didn't. My tag line will remain until Matt comes home too.

I didn't say cops don't let people off tickets, I know they do. It is the general characterization I have issues with. The 3 statements I listed are usually at the top of list for people who don't like law enforcement.

Oh wait - forgot the racial motives of most cops too - that is a big one.

Your characterization of cops by calling the "blue brotherhood" crap, accusing them of getting politicians off and allowing fellow LEO's families out of tickets is showing how much you don't like cops.

Nice straw man there...I don't like corrupt cops, ergo I doin't like cops?

What color is the sky in your world?

Let's apply the same logic...

1) I don't like vanilla ice cream...ergo I don't like ice cream
2)I don't like Brussel Sprouts, so I don't like green veggies
3)I don't like Scotch, ergo I don't like all hard liquor

See, in a rational world, you would realize your error...but either you are an LEO, or have family that are...or are just mesmerized by a badge to never question authority that is NOT being used correctly.

If you hate corrupt politicians, do you hate all politicians?

So, is Police Corruption a verboten issue?

Why don't more Cops come forward to get rid of those that are corrupt in their midst? And don't say there aren't any, because I can google search just like you can. Wow, the kool-aide must REALLY taste good.

I did not say anything against thee police who were doing their jobs...yet I was broad-brushed in EXACTLY the same way that you objected to for the LEO'S....did that EVER cross your mind?
