The Starbucks location on the Baylor University campus is stirring up more than just coffee -- they're stirring up some controversy.
Baylor University officials told Starbucks to remove a cup in the store they felt promoted homosexuality. The cup in question has a quote from gay novelist Armistead Maupin and reads:
My only regret about being gay is that I repressed it for so long. I surrendered my youth to the people I feared when I could have been out there loving someone. Don't make that mistake yourself. Life's too damn short.
Baylor University refused to comment on the issue. Starbucks employees said none of their customers had complained about the cup, but they did remove it.
I would be afraid to drink anything from that cup.
Good for Baylor.
The Baylor Bears versus the Baylor "bears"?
I can't imagine anyone taking time to read that whole quote. It must have been a huge cup for it to fit. Plus, no one in Starbucks is awake enough to read it, that is why they are getting coffee. ;)
I am glad I like my cheap homebrew and don't have to worry about going to starbucks for a PC lesson of love.
I surrendered my youth to the people I feared when I could have been out there loving someone.
Maupin was one of Rock Hudson's gay lovers. He outed Hudson just before the actor died from AIDS.
Take life advice from that guy at your own peril, I'd say.
I gotta warn my Dad; he's a Starbucks coffee drinker.
I am surprised this did not happen over in Austin. Steers and queers and whatnot.
I attended Baylor in the early 90's and I remember it being very conservative about a great many things.
For example, dances were not held on campus, but at the convention center in Waco.
Also, whenever we watched movies in one of the auditoriums, if it was rated R, there would be editing to remove nude scenes and curse words.
This may seem a little extreme as far as conservatism goes, but Baylor runs things their own way within the guidelines of the Baptist General Convention.
OTOH, the Noze Brotherhood was a fun secret society that provided a rebellious underground that should be found on every college campus.
Especially when you're gay.
I'm sympathetic to the basic sentiment on the cup. I've known individuals who tried valiantly to lead a straight life, and pass as straight, and it made them unhappy. However, for my taste it is just too easy, even for this simple statement, to read into it affirmations of liberal myths and "values" I abhor.
What? A Baptist school that actually keeps some of the Baptist morality???
What next, Notre Dame will actually teach traditional Roman Catholic values? Naw...
And Hell is for eternity...
Starbucks has a series of these. I think Jonah Goldberg wrote one. They're supposed to be "thought provoking". I read some of them on a website, not particularly unbalanced overall, but a dumb promotion. Goldberg himself thought so.
Startbucks should have told them to kiss it where the sun don't shine.
I've known individuals who've tried to lead a law abiding life, and pass as upstanding, and it made them unhappy. Happiness alone is a poor guide to living one's life.
I've been getting the Starbucks Organic coffee beans and grinding them up myself at home for my morning cup. It's a whole lot cheaper than their pricey coffee shops, and it is really good. I'm the only one who drinks coffee in our house, and generally only make a mug a day.
Baylor should not have the right to defend its values?
