KENNESAW, Ga., Sept. 12 - The cash register at Goody's clothing store here flashed $106.01 - for a dress shirt and three pairs of Levi's - but as Lori Smith reached for her credit card, a nearby voice brought the transaction to a halt.
"Tell you what, why don't you let me take care of it?" said Scott Evans, his delivery as smooth as a car salesman's as he directed Ms. Smith to a partner brandishing stacks of $1 bills.
Mr. Evans explained that they were there on behalf of NBC, promoting an unscripted show, "Three Wishes," which will have its premiere on the network on Sept. 23. In the series, the singer Amy Grant travels to a different town each week in an effort to fulfill the heart's desire of needy families and community groups.
For a network that dominated the prime-time ratings for a decade with sophisticated urban comedies like "Cheers," "Seinfeld," "Frasier" and "Friends," only to tumble to fourth place last season without them, Ms. Grant's show is a radical departure. "Three Wishes" is aimed, in no small part, at a churchgoing rural and suburban audience. And its marketing plan, evocative of a red-state presidential campaign, bears scant resemblance to any NBC has crafted before.
......... The network has also booked Ms. Grant - a pop singer who vaulted to fame singing Christian songs, crossed over to mainstream radio and recently released an album of hymns titled "Rock of Ages" - for interviews on Christian radio and taken out advertising in small-town newspapers.

LAME
(I'm sorry, but it seems REALLY LAME)
I've seen a preview of this show....it's a tearjerker all right.
LOL. JACQUES STEINBERG of the NY Times discussing red states. That's funny.
It's insulting, is what it is.
"We're NBC. We're going to buy viewers! By making them feel... pathetic!"
How elitist. How arrogant.
I'll advise you not to watch.
I doubt I'll watch either, btw.
What's NBC?
NBC is obviously trying to get in touch with the red states. They have what appears to be a pro-military series, "The E-Ring," starting next week. If the show lives up to its hype I just might start watching NBC again, at least for one hour each week.
Scrubs is they best show NBC has and they have not even annonce a return date.
Never cared for scrubs. Las Vegas is OK, but it's on at the same time as 24 so I only watch it in reruns. Medium is pretty good. The Apprentice is the only reality show worth watching. That's about it for NBC primetime for me.
Aside from 24 the best shows are on cable. I love Rescue Me on FX. The Comeback and Entourage on HBO are good. Not a whole lot else out there that I ever make it a point to watch.
Maybe they should do "Kramer Moves To Kansas."
Kramer: Oh, I'm putting up Frank's screen door. This beauty's got a little life in her yet.
Jerry: What do you need it for?
Kramer: (Closing door) The cool evening breezes of Anytown, USA. Let's see how this baby closes. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.
But will it even begin to approach the quality benchmark of "Queen for a Day"? (rolleyes)
>>>Las Vegas is OK...
That NBC show is OK...and in HDTV, Niki Cox is something...
I despise reality TV whether it's giving good handouts or showing people fight off four-foot sharks or swim in a tank of maggots.
Sounds rather condescending to me. 'Here you poor, ignorant red-stater. So sorry you can't live in a real city so we'll make it up by granting you a wish...'
This is obviously an attempt to catch up with ABC and their "Extreme Makeover - Home Edition" enterprise. I LOVE EMHE (anybody who doesn't has NO humanity), so I'll probably watch this show as well.
