True, he was speaking from New Orleans but that was a big opportunity to win the hearts of minds of New Orleanians

The purpose of the federal government is not to win the hearts and minds of it's citizens. That is what communist governments try to do.

It is the president's responsibility to govern as a conservative as that is what he campaigned as. A conservative does not believe that handing out money to win the love of the people is the way to govern a nation nor is the proper role of the federal government.

Most of devastated area would be rebuilt just fine without ANY federal intervention. I am sure that any buildings that were financed were forced to have flood insurance by their lender.

It is a great time in the history of our country. President Bush is the man that can lead us on to better and greaner pastures, with or without the help of others in this great land we call the United States of America.

Amen. This is a tremendous opportunity to break down some economic and racial barriers in our great nation, and unify the American people as never before, even though some FReepers don't "get it."

The President's speech last night was brilliant and wise. Best of all, he meant every word.

The memo around Washington for the Repubs. must be to just Shut up and suck it up and continue blaming Bush. for "being late to respond". You've got to admire the Dems......they would NEVER let this happen to one of their own without speaking up. They would be screaming from the rooftops!

If a Clinton had been president, the media would be all agog at how rapidly and wonderfully effective the Federal response was, how compassionate and wise the President was in advising the Mayor and Governor, how on-top of the situation the President was, etc. etc. Clinton would be strutting about the city in all his glory and his approval ratings would be soaring.

Any Republican who dared criticize the Federal response or Clinton's handling of the situation would be deionized and lambasted unmercifully. Most Republican politicos (at least in the Senate) would not want to be seen as out-of-step and would join in the chorus of praise.

I can't say I endorse or understand every concept put forward, but it seemed to me that President Bush was talking more about investing money than giving it away. Homesteaders will need to prove and pledge their ability to pay their mortgages. He talked about getting people back to work and, frankly, a whole lot of people will be working for the first time. I consider rebuilding infrastructure to be a necessary investment, not a giveaway.

I see your point about insurance and your concerns which are valid. We just don't have all the detailed information yet.

I don't think the President and admin. would be playing such a strong role, taking such responsibility if state, parish and city "leaders" were not so hapless and MIA. It was time for the grownups to take charge; may not be in line with conservative values but we cannot appear any more vulnerable to the world (i.e., terrorists) than the MSM has already portrayed us to be.

Many evacuees are going to be the ones doing the work, also. Hopefully, heh heh.

Wonder how long it'll take before Katrina victims get 9-11 like payments to forswear lawsuits. This is a dangerous and probably unconstitutional exaggeration of the role of the imperial federal government.

How would a New Orleans refugee that owned nothing to begin with ever be able to prove their ability to pay a mortgage?

I had started posting the comparison to Clinton, but deleted it! But you are so right. It's just blatant.

Um, quite a few did own their own property and businesses. The whole area was not a ghetto slum. The media wouldn't get as much sympathy and opportunity to bash the President from the expensive homes flooded in the suburbs.

Expecting people to show self responsibility is not showing weakness to anyone. Private insurance would rebuild much of New Orleans and the other affected areas. Why not let insurance take care of what it can and then see what is left to do?

Who said it was? These programs are a war on poverty step - not one for those that own their own businesses.

The people who owned their own property and businesses should have also had insurance. Why not let insurance run it's course?

When the situation arises, it will be dealt with.

Until then, we need to deal with this unprecedented disaster (in material loss) in a manner that will get this area back on its feet with business savvy and entrepeneurship......just like the President proposed.

I'm all for Rush's plan. Cut the pork in the energy bill, the highway bill and the farm bill and use that money first.

Sorry, Jeff, but I think I'll go talk to the fence post.

I guess I don't understand your rush to expand the role of federal government and spend other people's money. That is what we as conservatives have tried to fight back for a couple of generations.

Bad things happen everyday. This just happened to a lot of people at once. There are reasons why there is an insurance industry.
