But this is a lie! There were tractor trailers full of food and water delivered there BEFORE the storm and often there after. I have seen pictures of the trash left behind when they left. There were CASES of full water bottles and MREs laying on the ground.

...And countless air drops by Chinook helicopter just days after the hurricane.

Tell me, where in the speech does it say "building minority owned businesses" and "leaving most of the work to the private sector" is considered "welfare"? By all estimations, this rebuilding effort will be entirely done in the private sector. (read: your tax dollars and mine won't be raised).

This is the text of the state initiative that I worked extremely hard for...and that passed with 59% of the vote:

The state shall not discriminate against, or grant preferential treatment to, any individual or group on the basis of race, sex, color, ethnicity, or national origin in the operation of public employment, public education, or public contracting.

There will be a reckoning with politicians, local and state crooks and environmentalists about where the money designated to improve levees went for the last forty years.

No there won't. There will be months and months of delays and obfuscations, political spin and politicians flapping their gums. Then, a couple years from now, a 3-inch-think report (Taxpayer cost to prepare: $400 Million) full of government gibberish will appear, to land with a thud on the desk of the NY Times late on a Friday night.

Nobody will notice, but that's no matter, because the report will be unintelligible and will affix blame to nobody, certainly no politicians.

"My prayers for your family...."

I say the same to you and your step daughter and to other Freepers who have family and friends just waking from the stunning shock this devastating hurricane has cast upon them.

It's not just about helping disaster victims with or without flood insurance, (people who lost homes they owned), it's about the rest, that percentage of the population doomed to poverty. This is their chance to climb out of that mud and live a normal life, and some will take it, some won't. Just think, generations of people with low self esteem, no belief in themselves except what little democrats, Liberals, Jesse Jackson, Maxine Waters, and Al Sharpton allow.

An interview just before Katrina hit,(I'll never forget it), with two black women in a deserted playground outside their apartment house. Their children playing on the swings, and the reporter said, "Why aren't you leaving?" The women replied that they had no transportation, no money, so they were staying. No look of fear on their faces. No anger, simple acceptance. They lived from govt. check to govt. check and waited for the govt. to tell them what to do and when to do it. They literally had no concept of any other way to live. That is scarier than Katrina, and that's what GW is attempting to change. (I don't know. Maybe we need a human genome upgrade, and wouldn't that be nice!) It's going to take years to see how this pans out.

Most of those tractor trailers you speak of (most of them FEMA), were turned back by Governor Blanco and Mayor Nagin. Even Wal-Mart and Red Cross trucks were told to turn around.

Whine and complain and make DU look like an optimistic website

Nah....I'm just having my say.

I don't expect everyone to agree with me.....and a good thing cause they rarely do.

I am all for rebuilding NOLA prudently and restoring the historical districts if possible....and they better federalize that....or it will be stolen largely

Of course, the same goes for the Gulf coast.

I do however take issue with the race blame game tone (in a black run city) and the mention of minority set asides.....that simply blew me away.

That can get in line with CFR, Education Bill, Immigration and a few other W endeavors I don't cotton to.

W is just a bit more PC on this stuff than I am....sorry that's a lie.....he is way more PC...or I'm way more un-PC...oh well, I am not constrained like he is admittedly

Anybody wishes to question my pragmatic support for W can start looking up threads here that demonstrate such....there are a number....activism...recorded

they can start with my homepage

but I am not crazy about this speech

nor am I crazy about his silence over the gun confiscations down there.

there are some here who never disagree with W....and consider any dissent to be blasphemy....that's just silly...one can dissent without losing the baby is said bathwater

You think that every one of the evacuees should leave and never come back?

Who's going to operate the (very important) port? (And where are we going to get such good jazz and shrimp? ;)

I agree that NO should not be rebuilt as it was. It should be rebuilt better than it was.

And knowing the great American spirit and how we rise to any challenge set before us, I'm betting it will all happen before any of us expect it.

They did that an hour prior to the speech! They're all programed for negativity and have their talking points down pat.

No, some got through from the National Guard without her permission. I have all the pictures on a previous Free republic Post. I will search for it and post a link here.

I'm sure it is.......and the 'pure' conservatives around here are the belles of the DU ball. Pathetic.

Good thing there are so few of them.

What's scary is the demand of the feds/Bush for greater power in case of national emergency. States' rights will be buried, but in the face of Blanco and Nigan's monumental incompetence, there's nothing else but for the feds to step in early and with big feet.

I was talking about Bush's speech, not some state initiative you worked hard to pass. While all well and good, but the Constitution and federal laws already allow for the exact thing you worked hard to pass. I swear, I'd think this was pre-1964, just by looking at the Democrats.

Your post reminded me of a post a freeper made...SHe was helping out at the Astrodome...SOrry don't remember her name....

IIR the story correctly: SHe was counseling students to get them into school. One teen age boy she spoke with had dropped out because the gangs in his school had made attendance unsafe.....WHen she encouraged him, he smiled and said maybe he could go to college too....He was a good student. Hope that what "W" has given them "HOPE"!

My reaction to the homesteading idea, is mostly positive. But I have to consider it further.

LOL Meanwhile, we had the figures in TX revised today and we have 324,900 evacuees. That is a bunch and we are pitching in. So many of them are beautiful people and my heart goes out to them. So my hope is the homesteading goes thru because many of them will go back if they can live in decent places.
