AUSTELL, Georgia (AP) -- A trainee at a state law enforcement academy was accidentally shot and killed by her instructor Tuesday during a classroom exercise, authorities said.
The police trainee was among about 30 students in the seventh week of a state-mandated 10-week training course at the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy.

Cobb County Police spokesman Dana Pierce said the veteran instructor was "very traumatized" and had to seek medical attention.

Thank You for the update.......prayers for her family.

I can't think of any scenario in police training where live rounds would be used outside of a range setting. NONE.
This "instructor" failed to clear his weapon; that is the only thing that can be gathered by this story.
For the instructor to point and fire his weapon on a trainee indicates that he didn't clear it to be used in scenario training.
correct. the instructor should have had a real gun with the firing pin dismantled. it is important to see the true action of the weapon, but the gun should be rendered inoperable due to the fact that the teachers handle them so often and in close quarters.
Naughty, naughty. Sit in the corner.
Agree........just sad all way around for all involved.
Had a video here for a long time , can't find now of a young serviceman trying to impress his friend as to how a 1911A1 with the slide pushed out of battery wouldn't fire. Held to his head and tried to pull the trigger. Worked once in the little tape and second time he was pink mist in his memorable lesson....
Agree....will have to wait and see what , when and why. ......
I think I've seen that video.....
The very FIRST thing I learned about firearms, at about 5-6 years old is: treat ALL firearms (operative, inoperative, dummy, toy, etc.) as though the are loaded EVEN IF YOU "KNOW" THEY ARE NOT, and NEVER, EVER point ANY firearm at someone unless you intend to, and are fully prepared to, kill that person.
You said it, FRiend. Sad.
galloze humour
Who was the camera man?
If you are serious (and I doubt that you are) use a paint gun and some goggles.
Yeah. Man that's a shame. Prayers for her family.
It's sad but accidents do happen, an instructor should know better.
I stopped going to indoor shooting ranges years ago when I noticed all the bullet holes in the ceiling, You never know who's in the lane next to you.
That would appear to be the case, but perhaps there is some fact out there which would mitigate things.
Dunno I saw the video during Desert Storm, in a camp at Doha Qatar, ....weren't Eaker is all I know....:o)
There is no mitigating factor. He is a weapons instructor who failed to clear his weapon. The only other explanation is that a leprechaun put a round in his weapon.
Like he got two identical looking guns mixed up?
The local guys should back away and call in the GBI. If the shooter's department is involved in the investigation, they might be heading for a cover up.
