I can't think of any scenario in police training where live rounds would be used outside of a range setting. NONE.
This "instructor" failed to clear his weapon; that is the only thing that can be gathered by this story.
For the instructor to point and fire his weapon on a trainee indicates that he didn't clear it to be used in scenario training.

"The instructor needs to be fired. He should probably face criminal charges as well."
Depends. If the trainees were taught to duck under incoming fire and this particular one was too slow...

correct. the instructor should have had a real gun with the firing pin dismantled. it is important to see the true action of the weapon, but the gun should be rendered inoperable due to the fact that the teachers handle them so often and in close quarters.

Cobb County Sheriff Neil Warren said, As far as any ammunition in a training class in the facility is a no, no, Naughty, naughty. Sit in the corner.

Agree........just sad all way around for all involved.
Had a video here for a long time , can't find now of a young serviceman trying to impress his friend as to how a 1911A1 with the slide pushed out of battery wouldn't fire. Held to his head and tried to pull the trigger. Worked once in the little tape and second time he was pink mist in his memorable lesson....

I think I've seen that video.....
The very FIRST thing I learned about firearms, at about 5-6 years old is: treat ALL firearms (operative, inoperative, dummy, toy, etc.) as though the are loaded EVEN IF YOU "KNOW" THEY ARE NOT, and NEVER, EVER point ANY firearm at someone unless you intend to, and are fully prepared to, kill that person.
You said it, FRiend. Sad.

If the trainees were taught to duck under incoming fire and this particular one was too slow...If you are serious (and I doubt that you are) use a paint gun and some goggles.

It's sad but accidents do happen, an instructor should know better.
I stopped going to indoor shooting ranges years ago when I noticed all the bullet holes in the ceiling, You never know who's in the lane next to you.
To: KJC1
The instructor needs to be charged. That would appear to be the case, but perhaps there is some fact out there which would mitigate things.

The instructor, who was not named, has been placed on administrative leave until an internal investigation by the sheriff's office, the county police department and Austell police. The local guys should back away and call in the GBI. If the shooter's department is involved in the investigation, they might be heading for a cover up.
