Circle of Liberty, or Crescent of Embrace? - The Flight 93 Memorial
JEFFHEAD.COM ^ | 14-Sep-2005 | Jeff Head

The decision on what shape and form the memorial to Flight 93 will take is nearing finalization. If you remember, Flight 93 was the one airliner on 911 where the passengers had the time and the opportunity to fight back and end the plans of the murderous terrorists who had hijacked them. Who will ever forget the heroic words of Tod Beamer as he charged the terrorists with his fellow Americans? ""God help me. Jesus help me. Are you ready? Let's roll." " In making that charge and ending the terrorists murderous plans, they became heroes and delivered a victory to the American people in the midst of that day of attack and terror.

Amazingly, the design that is being finalized is called the "Crescent of Embrace", and includes a landscaping of the memorial that is a red crescent, which closely resembles the principle symbol of Islam and the symbol most meanigful to those murderous animals who the members of the Flight 93 passengers and crews defeated, at a cost of their own lives. Here's what that final design is depicted to look like:

Whether intentional or not, such a design in my opinion, and I believe to most Americans, is unacceptable. In no way should we memorilize the sacrifice and heroic actions of those brave Americans with anything that could remotely be construed to represent the symbol of the very enemies against whom they fought.

After considering it a few days, I have come up with a design of my own. I call it the "Circle of Liberty". Here it is:

The idea of this design is meant to be clearly all-American. There is a minature of the Statue of Liberty at the center, at the site of the crash. Surrounding that statue, are forty landscaped stars, each one with a central area containing a plaque memoralizing that specific passenger. Each star has a path that leads to the statuesignifying the individual path each trod to that fateful day and their sacrifice for liberty in the first resistance in the war that began that day.

This design also has a major entry from east or west, signifying the breadth of our nation and its coming together. In addition, all of the stars in the circle are tied together by a path leading in a circle between them all, signifying the unity and "closed circle" we as Americans must have in fighting and defeating this enemy...even as those passengers in crew were united in their sacrifice.

I believe that such a design is much more fitting and representative of our needs as a nation in this struggle and as we remember those who sacrificed all on 911, particularly the brave souls fighting their enemies on Flight 93. If I, as an admitted untalented and non-professional architect or landscape artist could come up with something such as this, surely the professionals tasked with presnting proposals to the US givernment could do the same.

If you are unhappy with the chosen design above, the "Crescent of Embrace", please contact the US Park Service at the Official Fight 93 Memorial Web Site and register your feelings.

I cannot diagree with you. Those passengers, in essence, formed the first militia of the war and defeated the enemies arrayed against them. Kept them from accomplishing their mission and killed them all in the process...while sacrificing their own lives to sve many more.

"Don't Tread on Me", sums up the sentiment very well.

I think we should just put a missile silo right at crash site, aimed at you-know-where.

THREE relatives of those who died say they don't mind.

3 out of how many? A very small percentage represented and the rest is liberal BS. "nobody
complained" --- well - were ALL relatives shown the islamic red cresent then asked?

Probably NOT!

This goes right along with the 9th circus court declaring the Pledge of Allegiance UNCONSTITUTIONAL today!

Time to raise the SECOND AMENDMENT to full active status!

Agreed - givernment should be an official term.

How much money can one get from the Federal Givernment???

9/11 sisters voted for kerry too.

This design is an INTENTIONAL INSULT TO THE USA.

Quite frankly if they approved an anti-american designe they to hell witheir opinion.

She should resign from the board. This idea must be scraped.

None of the families members of the folks who died in the crash object to design either.

Again, where is your proof on this statement? You're seem to be spinning for the architect on numerous threads.

I thing the fact the design is PERFECTLY alligned to mecca makes it 100% certain there is no coincidence here. This is 100% a slap at the USA.

The design approval board should be completly removed and a new board appointed.

She lost a loved one, and for that my sympathy is sincere and unbounded, but this is supposed to be a national memorial, not a private one. It is supposed to appeal to all Americans, not just those who suffered a personal loss. If she and the families of the others lost there, want a memorial more to their tastes, let them build it. This one is being built for the rest of America!

Listen to the interview and decide for yourself. That's what I did. The memorial has nothing to do with Islam... right from the mouth of the wife of the pilot who died in the crash. I believe her.

we could let Kristen Breitweiser and the jersey girls select the ground zero memorial, can you imagine what it would be like?

this whole argument being made that because "the families" say its OK, we should all be silent and just accept it, is insane. let them put it on their lawns.

So the interview says NONE of the family members object to the crescent? Not a single, solitary person?

I see the thing with my own eyes, I don't need to hear her opinion on what she thinks it is. if she told me the sky was green, would I have to believe her because she is a widow of the pilot?

most of them probably haven't even seen it in perspective. I am sure no family members thought the ground zero IFC museum was anything except a normal tribute, until some of them found out what was going to be in it.

Yes, and many of them participated in the design for the past few years.

In the interview she also mentions her support for Tancredo's work on the border issue.

I'm going to transcribe this and post the interview as a new thread.

I preparing to be flamed for posting this but...

Theres a U2 (I will not debate the fact that Bono is not a Bush-hater) song named 40, which is based on Psalm 40.

One of the lines from the original verse.

"Put to shame and confound all who seek to take my life. Turn back in disgrace those who desire my ruin."

That passage on a rock in the middle of the field would suffice.

Well, the memorial may have been meant to have nothing to do with Islam, but the resembelance to ISlam's symbols is undeniable, however well intentioned, and symbolism can be a very important message...particulalry when it resembles the very symbol that those the brave souls on Flight 93 died defeating.

Our enemies will use it as a rallying point and a propoganda tool. That must not be allowed.

Therefore, IMHO, it is unacceptable as the design for this national monument, which will be paid for an maintained through the monies of all Americans.

While I respect those who lost loved ones there and respect their own views, the clear need to avoid this type of thing over-rides that in this instance in my estimation. I pray they do something different. I heard today that the designer has indicated a willingness to change the design because of the outcry, and I believe that is what needs to happen.

As long as it is clear that the message was resolutely aimed at the terrorists, I would have no problem with that.

Just the same, having said that, I do believe some documentation of what happened that day and what we know from conversations that happened on the flight are in order...so we remember the specifics of why such a message is on a rock in the middle of that field and never forget.

Fifty years from now, it will lend that simple message meaning that you and I take for granted, having experienced 911 ourselves.
