US Senator Hillary Clinton vowed today to continue to fight for a "Katrina Commission" probing the Federal Government's sluggish early response to last month's massive hurricane - even after the defeat of a bill she authored to create such a panel.
"I called for an independent Katrina Commission because it is simply not appropriate for Government to investigate itself," said Senator Clinton, whose bill was defeated by a party-line vote of 44 to 54. "If we are truly going to provide the people in the Gulf - and all Americans - with the answers they deserve, we need an independent commission free of partisan politics," she said after the vote.
Senator Clinton's bill would have created a blue-ribbon bipartisan panel modelled on the committee that probed the September 11, 2001 terror attacks on New York and Washington.
The former first lady said after the vote: "What happened today on the Senate floor is the same thing that happened four years ago when our nation was desperately searching for answers after 9/11.
"Urgent calls for an independent commission were repeatedly ignored, but the American people did not fall silent. They continued to demand action and eventually the administration relinquished its opposition to the 9/11 Commission," the New York Democrat said.
Senator Clinton, considered a potential White House candidate for 2008, has taken a prominent role in criticising the Bush Administration for its failure to promptly dispatch troops and relief supplies to hurricane-hit areas.
Her bill is one of several being considered in Congress to either help the affected areas respond to the devastation of Katrina, or to investigate shortcomings in the Government's response before and after the deadly storm.
Hillary Clinton is a disgrace!
That's absolutely one of the nastiest headlines I've ever seen.
:)
No way we should have to take this from someone who loses their billing records on the living room sofa for three years!
I guess Hillary hasn't read her Senators primer...
One duty of the Congress it OVERSIGHT...and in this case, I think oversight of some of the changes THEY voted for, in changing around dozens of agencies into on huge one, MIGHT need to be investigated...
If they are going to spend OUR money, billions of dollars at a time...they should also have the responsiblity of oversight...and if that money is stolen, or spent on stuff like casinos, instead of levees....then, the congresscritters need to be held accountable..
Spin Hillary Spin.
Hmmm....guess this didn't apply to the 9/11 commission.
Hillary is caught strapping one on?
I haven't seen Hillary in NO lately. Is she afraid of getting her CANCLES wet???
YUP. Some headlines are too funny to make an actual comment about, but this has to be one of the worst.

It is almost useless to get upset about any piece of scum that is a 'demonrat'---maybe it is unfair to a few local reps but I will never vote for anyone wearing the 'rat' label again--until we clean out the filthy nests thay hide in and exterminate their ability to destroy our Nation, all Americans are in jeopardy--God Help America in the trying days ahead if America helps itself
