HUNTSVILLE -- A woman sentenced to die for the fatal shootings of her husband and their two children some 18-years ago was executed Wednesday evening.

Frances Newton is the third woman and first black woman executed since Texas resumed capital punishment. Her execution is the 13th this year in Texas.

The U.S. Supreme Court cleared the way for the execution when justices rejected appeals that could have kept her from becoming the third woman executed in the state since the Civil War, and the first black woman.

Without dissent, the high court declined a pair of appeals about an hour before Newton was scheduled to be taken to the Texas death chamber.

"Others might have quoted scripture and verse to disprove Jesus' teachings"

No, others quoted scripture and verse to show that you have been misled as to what Jesus' teachings really are.

May God have mercy on her immortal soul.

Why?

Why? Because my Lord commands me to hate the sin but love the sinner. Moreover, it is ultimately up to God to decide her fate. What we can do about her on this side of the mortal plane has already been done.

And, with remarkably few exceptions, I will speak no ill of the dead.

"The War Between Free States and Slave States"

Would those be the "Free States" where blacks were forbidden to live, or forbidden to bring suit against a white man, or subject to a whole raft of discriminatory laws?

Would those be the "free states" where Toqueville found more racism than in the slave states?

I hate this rewriting of history to make it look like northerners loved blacks and Southerners hated them. The opposite was more nearly true.

That's cool. I, on the other hand, occupy an inordinate amount of my time wondering if the Park Service will just make me stand in a really long line for free, or charge me extra to pee on Clinton's headstone.

Deuteronomy 5:17 says Thou shalt not kill.
The original Greek it was translated from means "criminal homicide".

Numbers 35:19 says The revenger of blood himself shall slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him.
MURDERER

15These six cities shall be a refuge, both for the children of Israel, and for the stranger, and for the sojourner among them: that every one that killeth any person unawares may flee thither.

16And if he smite him with an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

17And if he smite him with throwing a stone, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

18Or if he smite him with an hand weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer shall surely be put to death.

She's been in prison for 18 years, and now her punishment is over. If she had been in prison for life, her punishment would have lasted until she died. If you put people to death, you take away their punishment. They are no longer being punished for their crime. Their punishment ends. I would MUCH rather be put to death than live out the rest of my life in prison. Death is the preferred option. Death is the easy way out. Prison is hard.

#12...Who are you to judge whether she was forgiven?

Only God can do that.

She paid for her crime....she was executed.

You have no power over her eternity...

Her crime was horrible.....but she was imprisoned for years and then executed.
...People in jail can and do change for the better.....they find God...(not religion, as you call it)

Ask Chuck Colson!

You don't believe it happens? The most horrible murders ever committed in GA (the Alday murders in Donalsonville) were committed by three prison escapees. The ringleader almost escaped twice more from jail facilities while being held for trial for six or seven murders, rape, torture, kidnapping, etc. (once by crawling out a ventilation duct, once by hiding in a garbage truck). He bragged that he would do it again "once" he got out. He was finally executed; it was long overdue.

More recently, we had a prisoner here in GA beat, rape, and strangle to death a prison library volunteer. It's not "meager" to her family or friends.

This evil man will now get the death penalty he so richly deserved before (Fulton County doesn't generally give the DP even for the most heinous murders). But a wife and mother is dead because the jury failed to impose the proper punishment to protect the community (unless, of course, you figure that the lives of prison volunteers and employees are not part of "your" community.)

Some folks are just too dangerous to live. Those of us who have worked awhile in the justice system generally know them when we see them. And that's what the catechism is talking about.

I'm not going to call you a liar (lack of charity). But I believe that you are misinformed and somewhat naive.

You are talking about Karla Faye Tucker, a woman who deserved to die. She killed 2 people with the pickax and said she had an orgasm while doing it.

"President Lincoln obviously disagreed."

I don't think so. He knew full well that he was invading states that had seceded to keep them from seceding, and not because they had ay intention of overthrowing the government of the US.
