U.S. House backs hate crime measure protecting gays

WASHINGTON, Sept 14 (Reuters) - The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday unexpectedly backed a measure to expand federal hate crime protection to gay people, a measure that House conservatives had blocked for years.

The Senate has passed similar legislation, which also expanded protections for the disabled, several times in recent years but House conservatives had argued that these cases should be dealt with on a local or state level without additional federal intervention.

This time the hate crime measure was attached to a bipartisan bill known as the Children's Safety Act aimed at tightening reporting requirements for child sex offenders. Companion legislation has not yet moved through the Senate, so the ultimate fate of the gay protection provision is uncertain.

Still backers were jubilant.

See the link to the roll call vote in reply #31, when tancredo and kuccinich vote against the same bill, something ain't kosher.

The legislation may comprise a cornucopia of pet projects that various staffers surreptitiously added, each for their boss or agenda. More than likely the detail has not been read by a majority of those voting...

The bill had a roll call vote but the amendment that was added that added this hate crimes BS to the bill was only a voice vote.

Is this H. R. 259 introduced by Jackson-Lee?

An abomination. I'd love to see who voted in favor.

Where's the text of the amendment? (I read through the two versions of the bill listed at the website and could not find this amendment).

The roll call vote is meaningless unless it is understood within exact context of the amendment.

I'll go on record as disagreeing with you.

I approve of the Presidents actions most of the time, but he doesn't have the political guts to veto this.

If this passes the senate, and it will, he'll sign it.

Some far-seeing people, including lifelong socialist George Orwell, predicted Thought Police years ago.

We now have laws governing what you can and cannot think about. Think about that!

The frog is just about done.

Note that the House just voted to include sexual orientation and "gender identity" in a hate crimes thingie stuck on a bill. The Senate has shoved that at them for years and now they go for it.

People sometimes wonder why Jews in Germany didn't fight back more.

Well, look around. People will be asking the same question years from now about people in the US.
