9/11 chairmen: Bush should have seen the catastrophe earlier

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration should have realized that Hurricane Katrina was a catastrophe of national proportions and have mobilized federal troops and equipment even before the storm struck, the co-chairmen of an independent investigation into the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks said Wednesday.

“It was obvious nobody knew who was in charge,” Keane said. “There was no unified command structure . . . the mayor is saying one thing, the governor says another. The president is in the state, and the governor learns about it on TV.”

Keane and Hamilton made their comments at a breakfast for journalists. Later, they released an assessment of government action on recommendations their 9/11 investigating commission had proposed last year that was highly critical of both Congress and the Bush administration.

“A number of our recommendations were in the area of emergency preparedness. Had they been executed, the death toll would have been lower,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton said he was “encouraged” by President Bush’s statement Tuesday that he was responsible for any federal failings in the Katrina response. “That’s an extraordinary statement for this administration,” he said.

"“A number of our recommendations were in the area of emergency preparedness. Had they been executed, the death toll would have been lower,” Hamilton said."

Or he could have said "Most of out recommendations in the are of emergency preparedness we're executed and they didn't do anyone any good, they just wasted money."

But that would have been "an extraordinary statement for this" former congressman.

This is just so typical. Bush declared a national disaster area 2 days before the storm hit - what was he supposed to do? Divine the ferocity before the national weather service even could? Ignore the LA governor and send in troops anyway? Keane may be an *ss but he could not find himself with both hands.

Why the hell should we care what these biased flacks think? And, if they exonerated Bush, would that be a story? Heck, no.

Were they there? Can you believe that lying governor? Hamilton and Keane should keep their mouths shut especially in light of the lousy job they did on the 9--1 commission.

So Bush should have sent the regular army into southern Mississippi, the area which took the direct hit from the hurricane. Even on Wednesday August 31, the head of Louisiana's homeland security department was still claiming that the levy breaks were managable and should be fixed within the day - although it is now clear that he was talking out his backside.

Who is Thomas Keane? Is he any relation to Thomas Kean, the former governor of New Jersey?

That would have been an impeachable offense...not that our democrat friends would ever consider pursuing that! (/sarc)
