Step Right Up to Claim Your Blamey (Barf Alert!)

NEW YORK Hurricane Katrina has brought out the best in many people, while others are coming up short. How to keep score was swiftly dubbed the Blame Game _ a sport that, post-Katrina, was all the rage at the highest echelons of power (and seemed unlikely to lose its appeal even after Tuesday's "I take responsibility" pronouncement by President Bush).

But you don't have to be a big shot to play. When you feel an aim to blame, just get in the game and imagine handing out a Blamey Award (an all-purpose finger-pointing trophy that's suitable for blamers or blamees alike).

For instance, a Blamey (and a pair of pastry forks) might go to ABC News' Diane Sawyer for treating Bush to a cakewalk, instead of an inquiry.

Three days after Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, her much-hyped exclusive interview on "Good Morning America" gave Bush free rein to make promises for crisis relief he said was in the works, with little challenging by Sawyer, even as emergency measures were already proving calamitous.

"I want people to know there is a lot of help coming," said Bush, adding, "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees" _ an odd explanation Sawyer simply let slide.

"The president recognizes problems and solves them," the president summed up. "That's exactly what this administration is going to do."

Why do I suspect that the President is leading a one man parade in accepting responsibility for anything related to the state of Louisiana or New Orleans?

(btw, I heard the mayor was back in NO yesterday for the first time since the day after the hurricane so he could appear with the president. He purportedly bought a house in Dallas and his kids are already enrolled in school there. If this turns out to be true, this is going to really be a nail in the coffin and make my "Where Was Ray?" T-shirts fly off the shelves in the next election.
