The New York Times, which had been operating an all-free Web site, nytimes.com, will begin charging a fee for access to its major columnists under a new program called Times Select.
Starting Sept. 19, the New York Times will charge $49.95 a year for online users to access 22 columnists including Tom Friedman, David Brooks, Maureen Dowd, Paul Krugman, Bob Herbert, Nicholas Kristof and Frank Rich.
-snip-
Cybergossip Matt Drudge is threatening to boot the Times columnists.
"I will yank the Times scribes if I can't find other outlets that are planning to carry them," threatened Drudge. "The Internet is losing its innocence."

What arrogance. $50.00 would buy an awful lot of better quality manure than these twerps shovel.
Bwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!
And Delta should raise rates...
Bwhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!
I get one pop under ad at Drudge with Firefox.
Fifty bucks a year?
Okay.... see, what the NY Times inexplicably fails to remember is that those who are most likely to "subscribe" to their columnists are liberals, and liberals prefer to have their stuff given to them for "free" by the government after the government has confiscated it from their neighbors.
This move by the NYT is one of the oddest things I ever heard of.
Dowd couldn't get two dollars if she stood in spikey heels all night long in Times Square on a Saturday night.

In that context, getting Mo Dowd, Paul Krugman and Bob Herbert for free is hardly a "bonus".
No, you've got it backwards... For only $49 a year, they won't send you any columns, and won't force you to go to the web site.
Actually, it's a heck of a deal!

Kind of silly considering the lockstep mentality of the Liberal MSM. It doesn't matter what the issue is, you will find the same garbage in all the Liberal papers repeating the same exact talking points. One rag is as bad as the next one.
I would love to see the Deer in the headlights look on the editors face when they tell him circulation sunk even further with this bright idea.

Webmaster: "Our web site traffic is stagnant. No growth."
Editor: "Well, let's start charging for content. That should improve our web traffic."
Now we have a clear insight of how liberals should never run a business or make business decisions.
Wait--lemme charge only 39.99 and I can sum it all up (well, mebbe except for Brooks and Tierney): "We hate Bush"
I'm wondering if the public libraries and universities are going to be ponying up for "subscriptions" to these columnists. Many already pay for subscriptions to the NYT hardcopy anyway.
This would come under your government confiscation heading, and would be par for the course.
LOLOLOL!!
When I was in high school (c. '60s) it was common for some Social Studies teachers to mandate that students subscribe to the NYT. (At least, it was common around here - - the Philly area.) When I was in 9th grade, I had to buy a subscription to the NYT.
You could be right - - maybe there's some kind of wink-and-nod scheme going on here between the NEA (teachers union) and the NY Times, like there was with the union mob and Jim Wright's book.
Circling the bowl...
Interesting. Thanks for the ping!
A model for the free market economy.
When your product is not selling, raise the price!
This is a good thing. Let them find out just how irrelevant they really are.
My prediction, 6 months. (or the Slimes will hide the OL Subscription numbers).
