Syria slams 'baseless' US threats

Associated Press, THE JERUSALEM POST Sep. 13, 2005

A state-run newspaper on Tuesday criticized the US ambassador to Iraq for trying to intimidate Syria and said his "baseless" accusations of aid to foreign fighters were an attempt to detract from America's failures.

Tishrin's front-page editorial referred to Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad, who said in Washington Monday that Syria has become a hub for terrorists who want to stop Iraq's democratic progress and that US patience was "running out."

Khalilzad refused to specify what consequences Damascus might face. Asked by reporters about the possibility of a military action against Syria, he said: "All choices are likely."

"It is strange that the ambassador of a superpower uses the language of intimidation instead of being more committed to the traditions of international relations," Tishrin said. "Threatening with aggression is a style that reminds us of colonization and cold wars."

The newspaper rejected the terrorism accusations as "baseless."

"They are an expression of the same well known old policy of exporting crises and putting blame on others to cover up failure in preserving security and stability in Iraq," the editorial said, reasserting that Damascus has exerted all efforts to safeguard the borders and to support Iraq in preserving its stability and unity.

Iraq and the United States have both complained that Syria has done too little to block the flow of so-called foreign fighters into Iraq across the long and porous border. Syria has always denied it is allowing foreign fighters to cross saying it is impossible to control the more than 600 kilometers (360-mile) desert border.

On Sunday, Iraq closed a northern crossing point on Syrian-Iraqi borders in an attempt, according to Iraqi officials, to stanch the flow of insurgents from Syria.

Where is a good cruise missle when you need one. Syrian government is on its last legs anyway. The recent defector is spilling his guts out, because he wants to lead the post-Assad government. He's revealing all the involvement of the Iranians, jihadists, and palistinian scum in Syria.

Tell them "Fine, we'll control it for you." Then, obliterate with extreme prejudice any human or vehicle traffic moving across the border. And while we're at it, destroy those training camps that don't exist.

We can consider it training for keeping our own borders controlled.

If the border is impossible to control, we might as well just march right in and set up a few big bases.

The only way to secure our achievements in Iraq is to destroy the Baathist State in Syria or so devastate it that it can no longer provide active support to the monsters killing civilians and Americans in the Middle East.
