Early in Biden's "opening statement" before he asked questions, he said he didn't like pitching to Roberts because he was too smart, and was suggesting he could use a pinch-hitter. He suggested Fred Thompson, because at least 'I know as much as Fred Thompson does'.

the C-Span people helpfully added that Fred Thompson was sitting next to Roberts.
