About 15 minutes into it the variables became so numerous that I simply gave it up. I wish a few creationists would try that calculation so they could see how difficult it can be to find fossils for specific lineages and how remarkable it is we have as many as we do.

That's because it's not hard to demonstrate that this just isn't true. Ideas that aren't logically right get rightfully dismissed.

3.5 billion years is PLENTY of time for small changes to amount to a change of colossal magnitude. Simple example - continental drift rates average somewhere around 10% of the growth rate of your fingernails. In a billion years (do the math), that's more than fast enough for a continent to relocate halfway across the earth. You may think that's apples and oranges, but we have observed evolutionary rates that are more than fast enough to produce the kinds of change you're talking about.

Not really. The creationist attempts are intended to show the impossibility of evolution and their calculations have quite a few incorrect initial conditions. The calculations I tried to do were simply to show how fortunate we are to have found as many fossils as we have. I also tried to include as many factors as possible. The problem I had was in trying to determine the correct factors. That difficulty led me to abandon the calculation.

Besides, most of do not say the creationist calculations are wrong as much as we contend that any calculation is impossible.
