Jeff Parish Sheriff Lee commandeers Wal-Mart from FEMA

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee commandeers Sam's Wal-Mart stores Sunday, 10:30 a.m.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee said he has "commandered" the Sam's and Wal-Mart stores in the parish and ordered them to open as soon as possible.

Lee said he took the action after he learned that a Wal-Mart store wanted to open recently but was told by FEMA officials that it could not.

"I am upset with FEMA and some of their regulations," Lee said.

After talking about the situation concerning the Wal-Mart on Thursday, Lee said he briefly talked to Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-New Orleans on Friday. He asked her to check on the situation and find out if there was a legitimate reason to keep the store closed.

But because of communication difficulties, he did not hear back and took the situation in his own hands.

Lee said he gave handwritten notes to Wal-Mart stores in Harvey and Kenner saying they were ordered to open as soon as possible. Lee said Parish President Aaron Broussard agreed with the decision.

Lee said anyone from FEMA who tries to close either store will be arrested by deputies.

"We're encouraging the businesses to get up and going."

On other topics, Lee said he had 40 deputies who didn't report for duty for the storm. One who tried to return was told not to waste his time.

"As far as I am concerned (he) will never get a job in law enforcement again," Lee said.

"The reports indicate that they lost contact with their officers at a crucial time due to Fema unilaterally disconnecting the working infrastructure."

So says the media? You believe everything the media tells you?

They also re-established their communications by taking back the tower ( so the story goes ).

Didn`t they have a backup plan if the tower went down?

Sounds like it was just as chaotic there as it was everywhere else down there. Everyone blaming everyone else for their lack of planning.

I am not an apologist at all. Point to where I have been totally on FEMA`s side?

You are assuming I am on FEMA`s side because I don`t completely agree with you, but you`re assumptions are wrong.

I have been critical on all levels of this disaster. Local, state, and federal.

"Everybody screwed up badly"

Yep.

And the bickering between local, state , and federal agencies continues.

Funny that most of it coming out of Louisiana.

Florida , Alabama, and Mississippi seem to be going along without alot of media coverage. Hmmmmmmm....

I think the media is fueling alot of these problems. And that really ticks me off.

seems to me the lesson of LA is that the police MUST use the ARMED citizens to be a police "auxiliary".

To do anything else just exposes the risk of looters run amuck.

"You can't have the right hand working against the left hand"

You can't? Sounds like standard operating procedure for Louisiana.

From the article: "Lee said anyone from FEMA who tries to close either store will be arrested by deputies. "

Hmmm... Government bureaucracies devouring each other. Sounds like a good thing.

"Did you know that VERY little of FEMA's mission has anything to do with "disaster recovery"? The bulk of their resources are involved with stuff like the "Continuity of Government" plan."

It beats Anarchy. Are you an Anarchist? If you are, then I think we are done talking here.

You seem to be quite a talented feller. It's not everyone that can carry out a conversation all by himself. It's quite entertaining to watch, too.

One request, though -- when you're playing the part of your alterego, please don't go putting any words in MY mouth, OK? It's beyond rude.

OK, you may now carry on with the puppetshow. Don't mind me stepping out for a while, though. I'll be back later. Or not.

Oh, before I go -- one question for YOU, in the spirit of your little sideshow: Are YOU a STATIST?

If you are, then I think we are done talking here.

Also remind this guy that the Sherrif is the chief law enforcement official in any county and the Federal Law enforcement operates there at his discretion.

I fear that we're leaving that behind, relegating it to the realm of "Yeah, on paper, sure, but in the real world, 'MIGHT MAKES RIGHT'".

I'm sure it probably sounds more authoritative in the original German.

I think we're coming up to the day when a local sheriff standing up to the Big Boys will be an American equivalent to that Chinese kid who stood in front of that column of tanks in Tienanman Square.

He lost, in case anyone missed the ending. :(

>>>"The only Chinese-American sheriff in America"<<<

And a First Class Poser!

He is a Fat Ass that thinks he deserves a Crown, but on the other hand he is a lot of fun at parties, very likable funny guy, has solutions not just gripes (he is not known to be a whiner).

He is very friendly with Politicians and the Mob and well suited for duty in Louisiana.

TT

First, who is going to shop there or be allowed to come in to work.

They'll just order people to work and shop there, at gunpoint!
