Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee commandeers Sam's Wal-Mart stores Sunday, 10:30 a.m.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee said he has "commandered" the Sam's and Wal-Mart stores in the parish and ordered them to open as soon as possible.
Lee said he took the action after he learned that a Wal-Mart store wanted to open recently but was told by FEMA officials that it could not.
"I am upset with FEMA and some of their regulations," Lee said.
After talking about the situation concerning the Wal-Mart on Thursday, Lee said he briefly talked to Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-New Orleans on Friday. He asked her to check on the situation and find out if there was a legitimate reason to keep the store closed.
But because of communication difficulties, he did not hear back and took the situation in his own hands.
Lee said he gave handwritten notes to Wal-Mart stores in Harvey and Kenner saying they were ordered to open as soon as possible. Lee said Parish President Aaron Broussard agreed with the decision.
Lee said anyone from FEMA who tries to close either store will be arrested by deputies.
"We're encouraging the businesses to get up and going."
On other topics, Lee said he had 40 deputies who didn't report for duty for the storm. One who tried to return was told not to waste his time.
"As far as I am concerned (he) will never get a job in law enforcement again," Lee said.
The audacity of this sherrif thinking he can countermand imperial orders from FEMA must be crushed. As you can see many "freepers" and I use that term loosely support the continued forced evacuations and seizure of businesses and assets under various lame pretenses. I guess they like having someone take control of their house, belongings, businesses and constitutional rights.
It sickens me.
"Harry Lee is a great sheriff? He let his officers line up on the Crecent City Bridge and shoot at people trying to get out of New Orleans. It sounds like he's done everything he can to make the situation worse if you ask me."
Cite a source? So, how many were shot? Where are the bodies?
Were these elderly and sick, or teenage to 30-something males carrying weapons and looted tv's?
Were they mobs set on looting and destroying the community he is charged with protecting?
How about a little more detail?
It would make sense for FEMA not to destroy the working infrastructure in the area. Jefferson Parrish tried and did maintain control thanks to the efforts of their local officials not the FED.
Th
"A sheriff does and should have the authority to overrule FEMA."
Walmart WANTED to open their store, but FEMA said no.
Since when does FEMA have the right to tell businesses they need to shut down, when they are capable of operating?
Also remind this guy that the Sherrif is the chief law enforcement official in any county and the Federal Law enforcement operates there at his discretion.
how does one force a private enterprise to stay closed for business - with a gun???
You captured my sentiments exactly. For a Democrat to not only be ok with, but encourage a Walmart to open is amazing.
Ahhh... my mistake. I was under the impression that Jefferson Parish was part of the city, and not its own community. Thanks for clearing that up.
"It would make sense for FEMA not to destroy the working infrastructure in the area."
How did they do this? I thought the hurricane did a good job of it already.
"When you move in and take over an area, the very first thing you want to do is establish total "air" supremecy."
Oh boy, I see where this is going.
"Did you know that VERY little of FEMA's mission has anything to do with "disaster recovery"? The bulk of their resources are involved with stuff like the "Continuity of Government" plan."
It beats Anarchy. Are you an Anarchist? If you are, then I think we are done talking here.
Look, if you are unable to figure that out, further conversation is futile
"Look, if you are unable to figure that out, further conversation is futile"
If you can`t explain your comment, then maybe I am not the one with the problem.
So you may be right, further conversation is futile.
I will give you a clue. The radio worked before FEMA disconnected it.
"I will give you a clue. The radio worked before FEMA disconnected it."
Thanks for the "clue". But I already knew that.
Hence the disconnect in your thinking. The police patrolled Jefforson parish and maintained relative control. The police infrastructure was intact.

Yeah, then how did the sheriff lose about 40 of his deputy`s/officers ( they are gone, nowhere to be found ). And why did the citizens of Jefferson Parish have to form their own militia`s to protect their property?
They did not have control of this area, that is baloney.
They shut down a bridge, that is about all.
VERY GOOD POINT!
Nice catch.
And so? All the rest showed up and there was no major looting in Jefferson parish. They couldn't open the walmart had it been totally looted. And why did the citizens of Jefferson Parish have to form their own militia`s to protect their property?
They should have done that to free up police officers.
The reports indicate that they lost contact with their officers at a crucial time due to Fema unilaterally disconnecting the working infrastructure.
