I think the reason it was today is because of yesterday's tape released by Al-Qaeda. It mentioned specifically attacking Los Angeles "tomorrow". Kinda coincidental... But I agree with you - most people assume the worst nowadays, have to admit myself included.
Helicopter reporters' early sightings of fires at three refineries near the three transformers effected (San Pedro, Wilmington and Long Beach) should be followed up, along with the L.A. Fire Department's assessment that it looked like a main line "had been cut."
The timing of this is just too creepy after yesterday's AQ rant.
